Okay, so add me to the list of new engines. They said it will take two weeks!!!!! I had a crappy Saturn ION (man it makes me appreciate japanese automakers) I complained so they put me in a KIA Optima which is still crappy but much better than the ION.

I am not looking forward to a new engine. I don't like the idea of them working on my baby. I wish they would just give me the engine and let me do it. I did a walk through on my car before hand because there are only two scratches on my baby and I want to keep it that way. But I guess having a new engine at 27,000 miles is not a bad thing. I just hope there are no problems that arise from the trauma of installing a new powerplant. I am curious if my times will be affected that the track.

I've got an '04 with 24+K miles. I store it during winters here in Wisconsin. My dealer has ordered a replacement engine for me and I'll wait until I take the car off the road for the winter before I do the replacement. The engine was ordered without any testing done before hand. If I am reading things correctly I am given to understand that most of the problems come from engines that have used synthetics. Doesn't the manual state quite clearly that synthetics should not be used? If you've been using synthetics.. are you getting the oil change at the dealership ? Because of the HP snafu I'm getting free oil changes for 50K miles and I suspect there are a lot of guys like me getting the same perk. So my question is this..............are the dealers using synthetics ? My dealer isn't. If yes, I guess I would immediately find a new dealer as that would seem to imply that they have become there own worst enemy.

An one final smart assed comment to those who bemoan the gas mileage........cry baby......you bought a sports car and if you drive like it was intended to be driven why are you bitching about gas mileage? maybe you shoulda bought a geo metro instead. regards, Manyhats

Took my baby in for the recall this week and came away with a new Cat.

Kiefer's service was top notch. Got everything done in one day AND....
When I get the call it's ready for pick up I'm told the following:

"Oh, by the way, we found a nail in your right rear tire - so it's up the road at Firestone getting patched...the car should be back by the time you get here"

NOW THAT'S SERVICE!

I did see one of the unfortunate few standing on blocks waitng for a new engine.

Actually - I would guess that the dealers are not using the correct weights; though I'm not sure how much impact that would have. Somehow I doubt the dealership staff are breaking out the 5w20 bottles - instead opting for the pull down handle w/the most commonly used weight. hmmm.

But I do agree with the scapegoat comments. More likely like RG has said - Mazda is unwilling to say XXXX (read Mobile 1 synth) brand synths are no good for the rotary.

I was on vacation when I made the purchase.

I have to politely decline to answer.

In areas of the Middle East, and some parts of Europe, mopeds are common, seen everywhere, and are socially acceptable methods of transportation. However, I live in the US, where that is not the case. How could I possibly drive a moped, knowing that everyone who sees me is pointing and laughing their pants off? How embarassing! Have some self-respect for yourself and not look like Peter Parker delivering pizzas!

Well I still have and drive my Honda Elite 150 scooter from my college days. It gets up to at least 60MPH and gets far better mileage then my RX-8.

I gave the service manager copies of the letters from MNAO (to the dealers) when I checked-in. Pointed out the details of the recall, white glove treatment, etc.

Waited 50 minutes after the tech was done with my car (computer logged) while it sat in the back of the dealership. (Being detailed, I thought) Watched two 8's that showed up after mine, finish and leave...

Then asked what the status of mine was ( I was worried mine was more in depth than just a reflash and plugs) and was asked "Didn't they call you already... Your car has been done!"

Rolled up with greasy fingerprints, and brake dust on the hood.

Telling the dealer about the miscommunication was my way of letting them know I'm doing my part to communicate my expectations and I felt they "dropped the ball" and needed to correct their procedures if they wanted to maintain the relationship.

I think they appreciated the input...

ROFL not in my city. It takes me 40 minutes to go 38 miles to work, 40 minutes to get home. That's from Lugoff SC to right around the Columbia international airport "neighborhood". Google Map it if you wish. That's going from one side of the world to the other around here.

It leaves me plenty of time to drop-off & pick-up my 8.

I called my dealer yesterday...He is in San Diego...I live in the dessert about 120 miles away. Was trying to get in a week from today it being Friday and alll that I could stay over for the weekend....no luck they tell me they are only doing one RX-8 per week. Next opening until October 30 and get this expect to keep it for a week. This same dealer already installed a new engine for me in April of last year. I have had no major problems after they also gave me a new starter, battery and set of plugs. I wonder if this was a prelude to the latest recall. Anyway they are supposed to provide me with a rental but it will still complicate my life more than I need. Anyone have an idea when our car qualify as a lemon. I am in California. Dont get me wrong I love my car but I have done a lot of running around for it. I would appreciate any input....thanks again. N

My car was running fine, I drive it to redline several times a day, I use Mobil 1 and always have. It sucks to have an engine replaced when you are not having problems. It sucks even more to have to drive a crappy KIA 100 miles a day while you are waiting for your baby to be fixed.

Oh, and the lemon law only applies to a specific problem that has been not been fixed by a dealer after several tries.

Picked up my baby today. She's been in over a week combo of re-call and a persistent CE light. 4 days of which was waiting for a part! The dealership FINALY figured out the problem - I'm sure its gone now as I thrashed her today and she didn't have the problem. The replaced a coil (part of the ignition?) and a few cables. The recall led to PCM flash and new Spark Plugs.

She is an absolout DREAM. I've been driving a Pontiac Grand Prix in the mean time. OMG That car is sooo bad. A part of me enjoyed the automatic in traffic but everything else was horrific. I didn't enjoy driving when I was driving that. I wasn't driving, I was wallowing and slipping around the place. Unresponsive, slow, soft suspension, no connection to the road.

When I got back in my baby today it was like another world. The precise fluid power of the gears and accelerator peddle. The gradual but definite thrust... a dream to behold. I take back anything I said because of this recall. What a bargain car for the price. Feels so much more luxurious than the price tag.

Car seems a bit more responsive and powerful since the PCM flash and spark upgrade.

Yeah, I had my coils replaced about a month ago and now I'm getting a new engine! The dealership knew about the recall then and they tried to keep me running till it officially came out. They have been real good with helping me, I should have my baby back next Thursday.

Ha, got mine back from the recall on monday (just a re-flash, hell if I know they did anything else, zero communication) and tonight I finally got around to putting the Penzoil Platinum Synthetic in my baby..... I was just WAITING for the recall to be done so I could switch to Syn. Didn't want to give them any scapegoat if they found something wrong during the recall. I got free oil changes frommy dealer too, but I just don't trust them to touch my car (any car I have owned for that matter)
so I am perfectly happy turning a wrench or two in my driveway. Hpefully the next time I go to the dealer, it will be to trade it in for a new one in few years. New flash is working great accross the rpm band, only one bobble so far on the second day it dipped below 5oo RPM and nearly stalled out at stop light, but I attribute that to the ECU learning curve. That with my RP diff and tranny change out, its like I got a new car.

Is there any Canadians out there that have had the recall?
I went in today with a copy of pdf documents provided in this thread and the dealer said they knew nothing about it.
Should I just hang tight for a bit or get ugly on their ***?

Yeah, its makes you appreciate what you have when you have not got it, just what a great car the 8 really is, I have said it to many I know with 8's. some of us tend to forget what we drove before..and just how there is no comparison..
