I stuffed 4 girls in my 8 one time going to a party... all weighing around 100 pounds. The one that had to sit on the center console in the back was wearing a short *** skirt... All the more reason to look in that rear view mirror... I was looking out for our safety Safety first boys.

Oh, and on the topic of the thread... My car got to the dealership in arkansas for recall work on thursday... They are going to have my car untill atleast monday, they said they are waiting on parts. Spark plugs and something else (he couldn't remember, lol). I doubt I will need a new engine, havn't had any problems(other than it flooding 1 time), and I'm at 76k miles, 04.

Those that are having starting problems right after the recall should just wait it out a couple drive cycles, the car begins to start better. It takes the ECU a couple cycles to learn everything it needs to be back to normal. Same goes for the idle too.

I called my rep today to check on my car and they said they should have the engine replaced by monday. I asked him if they would replace my clutch while they have the tranny and engine apart, and he said yeah it runs about $800.00 and that it would be $500.00 cheaper than usual. Holy ****! Should I just get a aftermarket clutch and bring it to them? I'm not sure I need a clutch but my 27k are hard miles so I just figured. Plus I know once the clutch is taken off the flywheel it might not mate back up right. Damn, I should have thought about this before they did the recall.

i am confused... why do you have to buy a new cat??? this is part of the recall!!!

and i love troubleshooting..

btw, if they say it is out of warranty... it was extended to 60 k miles... if that does not cover it... the emmissons i think goes to 100k miles.. pm me if you need to fight this.

So here's my story...

I took my 04 with 58K miles into Alhambra Mazda about 3 weeks ago, asking them to check on the sudden loss of power my car was having while driving through the desert (104ºF ambient temp, engine rattling, couldn't accelerate past 50mph uphill even in 4th gear, which also happened several other times during the summer on particularly hot days). The following day (coincidentally) I received the infamous recall and warranty extension notices in the mail.

After two weeks of being without my car they finally released the car back to me with new spark plugs, battery, and catalytic converter. I was charged for the battery replacement (prorated) and a few hours of labor for the shop mech to "clean my throttle body" (he threw my k&n drop-in filter down on the ground like a bit of hot turd). They somehow ate up half a tank of gas while the car was in their shop, and didn't even bother to fill it up for me afterwards.

The following day (Sunday the 17th) the car had the EXACT SAME PROBLEM with sudden loss of power and inability to accelerate uphill (96ºF ambient temp, no engine rattling, however) - damnit an old Hyundai Excel passed me going uphill, while I was moving off to the far right to let the fully-loaded 18-wheelers pass. So on Monday I bring the car back to the dealership, and the service manager says he talked to Mazda and they "require him to reproduce the malfunction by test driving the car" before the service department can proceed with further repairs or modifications.

After another week without my car, the service manager tells me he can't get the car to have the same problem I was describing. Well ain't it convenient that the weather is getting cooler now here in LA. To top it off, he was probably doing the test driving during the evening when it surely wouldn't be hot enough out (as the problem so far has only occurred when it's at least 90ºF out). So I agree to pick up the car and try to reproduce the problem (because if THEY can't do it then I MUST be lying or delusional).

Adding insult to injury, the service manager tells me they would not be covering the cost of my rental car because my original factory warranty has already expired. Nevermind the 5yr/60K extension which only covers the powertrain. So I've been charged for 5-days' worth of Corolla action because of the way Alhambra Mazda decided to interpret this dodgy warranty extension.

Shame on me for thinking I could get away with having some kind of vehicle to drive while putting faith in these asshats to make at least a fleeting effort to ease my worries about not being able to drive my car because it's a slight warmish outside.

So my question to you all is this: is it possible to get a "second chance recall" test procedure done at another dealership? If so, which would you recommend in the Los Angeles / Orange County area? I have about 58800 miles on the car now, and would really hate for the soon-to-be warranty expiration to exclude me from getting a proper fix for this persistent intermittent problem.

Your suggestions, comments, and kicks to the groin are all greatly appreciated.

The dealer replacing your engine should give you notice on the condition of your clutch plate and pressure plate, if in their opinion it should be renewed...do so.

IF the used clutch is fine you would have no problem in reusing it, the pressure plate has locating pins and would fix in the same place, the clutch plate would be OK to fit in any position.

Personally IF as you say your RX-8 has done some hard miles, I would replace the clutch while there is the opportunity, you could look for a heavier duty set ...hope this helps.

Took my car in on Thursday for the recall, to have the transmission checked and to see what was causing my car to smell like burning rubber. The car passed the recall just fine even though I complained about low idle and power loss at mid to high RPMs. The transmission also passed despite the fact that the gear box is much notchier than before and at times difficult to get into gear. They also couldn't determine what the burning smell was. At 55,000 miles it's not cosmoline, it's not a plastic bag on the exhaust, and it's not a burned clutch.

When I called to make the appointment, my new service advisor tried to tell me that they only gave rentals if they needed to replace an engine. I explained exactly what the recall notice stated regarding the rental and after a bit of nudging he agreed to "let" me have a rental (a crappy Chevy Impala) .

When I picked the car up on Friday, it was not washed - in fact it was dirtier than when I brought it in - and it had a quarter tank of gas! So I told my service guy about the "white glove" service in the recall notice and he just shrugged and said that he would have the car washed and gassed-up. So I waited 25 minutes to get my car back. When I got it back I jumped in and drove off because I was now late to pick up my wife at work (we were car pooling because her car was in the shop). Driving over it dawned on me, not only did they NOT clean the inside of the car, one of the techs put their greasy paw print on the gray airbag cover of the A-pillar! On top of that there was grease on the brake pedal!!!

Monday morning the service manager is going to get an ear-ful from me. It's not like this is the first time these guys have shafted me and I've had it.

Never go to Alhambra Mazda, that place is the definition of sketchy.

Sucky cleaning on their part. What's funny, when I take my car in to my dealership they never touch the outside (which is good because I don't want them to) but they always vacuum the pine needles up off my floor mats. LOL

Madronin they obviously didn't use the white gloves they are supposed to when servicing the 8s.

What takes grease out of the headliner or a-pillar?

I don't mind if they wash the car. They have a touchless on site that just gets the dirt off and makes it easier for me to take it home and give it a good wash and wax.
