You need to remove the leash & the collar and let it run hard in the countryside for a whole afternoon. Now.

My '04 went in yesterday for the recall checkout. Reprograming of the power train module and 4 new spark plugs. Everything else checked out within specs. No gas; no wash. Got a CX7 as loaner. Got my 8 back the same day...they had it about 9 hours. It still runs as well as the day I drove it home...no difference before or after the recall service. 32,000 miles. I've been getting just over 22 mpg on the freeway for the three years I have owned it. I have no complaint.

Well so much for the recall. For mods all I have is the REV I, cold air intake and the new fan control from Scott under the hood and a Racing Beat exhaust. The Mazda dealer that I took it to will not do any recall work as the car "has too many mods". Any one know a dealer that will honor the recall?? I live in Vegas but I guess I'll have to be going else where.

Y'know, when I made the decision to buy the 8, I considered the fact that no one had been producing rotary engine vehicles for decades (except for the RX7 which had been out of production for about a decade); I considered that Mazda had spent so much in their determination to make the rotary viable that they had to accept Ford Motor Co. as a major shareholder in order to stay solvent; I recognized that it was a risk to buy a car with the new, unproven Renesis engine. With this considered, I decided that if Mazda was committed enough to risk their corporate future on continued development of the rotary, then I was also willing to take a risk and buy the car as my small way of contributing to their determined effort to make the rotary concept a commercial success. I realized that there could well be serious problems. I accepted that risk up front.
Anyone who thought they were buying a guaranteed, tried and proven vehicle was kidding themselves. I don't look at this as though Mazda owes me anything. I am greatful that at least one car company was willing to take a big risk with the rotary engine and a four-door sports car. I "invested" my own money in this risky proposition with my eyes open and have been very pleased so far. If someone wanted a guaranteed, problem-free vehicle, they should have bought a Camry or an Accord. Buying a first-of-its-kind vehicle is a little like rolling the dice in Vegas...only with the odds a little more in your favor (I hope).

I think Vermont is just a little far to drive for recall service but at least you have an understanding dealer. The dealer I had before (since has closed) told me untill I actually altered the engine or added FI to it, he would cover warranty concerns. I only had two to choose from and I guess I picked the wrong one. Now it's on the computer that I was deniged because of "too many modifications". I guess I'll be out of luck if the engine fails. I'm concerned about the oil metering that the flash was supposed to increase.

Well, yeah...I'm not suggesting that I would accept a blown engine in stride. I was mainly addressing the issue of some people seeming to expect free gas & a wash job. I'm always pleased when I get a wash with a service visit (I've gotten that with an oil change), but I don't expect it. That of course is a dealer decision. The dealers are paid very well by Mazda (I believe) for the warranty work they perform, so it is good business practice to do a complimentary wash...or even a tank of gas (I got that with the car new, but that was the last time).
I am surprised that a dealer would reject a car for mod's. They are just turning away business. I have the free scheduled maintenance because of the initial HP issue. I was quite surprised that the bill to Mazda for the 30K service was over $700. I guarantee you I would not have paid anyone $700 for the oil change at $30K if it was out of my own pocket...maybe Mazda N.A. gets a discount for volume.

The dealer should not be voiding your warranty for the recall. My dealer has never given me any issues for REVI and RB exhaust or any of my other mods that I have done. Good info:

ok so my 2006 is booked in for the recall inspection on Monday.
First off I was disappointed to learn that Devon no longer works at Herzog, worse still they have no replacement so there's no Mazda service fella right now.
The man I did speak to informed me that no RX8's had been back and had engine replaced so I suppose that's a good thing.
So looking at other people's experiences I should be making sure (along with the obvious recall inspection) that they fill up the tank, vac and wash and provide courtesy car for the duration of the work done....anything else?

Woops screwed up again - I guess I saw what I wanted to see as I was ordering stuff from Vermont.

I'm against frivolous lawsuits, but more and more lately I feel some people deserve a good suing. Tell them about the Moss-Magnussen Act. If they still refuse to service your car, contact MNAO or maybe have your lawyer call them.

I've been looking through the vehicle inspection procedure pdf for this recall (4206F) and it states that if a new engine is needed due to a test failure then they need to order a re-manufactured 2004-2005 motor.
My question is what do they do as part of the 're-manufacture' process? It is a complete rebuild making the engine to all intents and purposes brand new?
The reason I ask is that my car is a 2006 and I don't think I'd be comfortable with serial numbers on an engine that state 2004 yr build.

Phil's 8, you have a RB super cat and RB catback. Can some other person here describe how that might cause the recall testing to have bad readings - maybe, or definitely? Could this be why they turned you away? Dunno why they didn't re-flash you though.
Oh, and, don't answer this if you're doing so based on conjecture (guessing). I've heard way too many conspiracy theories here - enough to choke a horse. Let's save this for somebody who really knows what they're talking about. Thanks in advance for y'all's restraint.

I have yet to get this recall letter in the mail. I have a locked mailbox and doubt people would steal my mazda recall letter. Has anyone else have yet to receive this recall notice?
Should I call up my local dealership?

You can find a copy on the Rosenthal webste. There is a link her for them in here somewhere. Print it out and take the car in. If the dealer puts up a fuse, call MNAO on them and find another dealer. This is a very important recall for your car. This particular re-flash will likely save your engine from a slow, tortured, oil-less death.
