^ Media generates fever for sure, and Detroit is coming. Too bad I will not be there for the show, or just maybe I will be...

Wow, my head is spinning as well. Thanks a lot for the "hints", zoom and rg. Few questions still linger....

1) Is there going to be any increase in hp for the base model? Or the Type RS?

2) The "new face" we're seeing---is that the regular Rx-8 or is it the front bumper of the Type RS?

3) Why are there no leaked pics of the real thing yet ????

More "hints" would be much appreciated, guys..

they have found a few more ponies to make a measurable and marketable change.
the type R will have to wait until closer to NAIAS or later

because of the restricted access to the real thing if pics leaked Mazda would know the source and the flow of info would come to an abrupt halt.

is the third oil injection port out there? or the whole new wiring loom that makes the new control and oiling scheme incompatible with the old cars? or the new from the header back exhaust?

Thanks a lot, zoom! Believe it or not, I am actually sweating on the ponies not being increased by too much (which is the complete opposite of everyone here).

Not that I dont want more power, but I live in Bangkok, where tax on cars is huge. As it is, the 8 is going to cost me around 80,000 USD. There's another tax which is based on hp---ie any car above 220hp gets hit by this "extra" tax. Because my car will be imported directly from Japan (JDM spec), they go stricly by the Japanese numbers. As it is the 6 speed auto 8 is listed at 215 ps, if the ponies go up by more than 5, it'll put the price of the car up to over 100,000 USD---which means, I can no longer afford it land end up buying the "old" version---arrrgggghhhh.

Either way, sorry to digress, but you guys should consider yourself lucky living in a country where you can buy great cars for under 30,000 USD.

WELL,
I have just returned from talking to a Mazda Parts Manager that I trained and here is some news, the 3 RX-8's that are being tested in our outback are of the new model..
One has the RENESIS 13B "Covered Face lift", its appears US, Europe and Australia are testing them.
The other 2 have the 1.6 RENESIS one with DI and the other with NA!!!
They are all Japanese (factory) engineers with Mazda Australia techs accompanying them.
The MA "gossip" is that they have until the end of January 08 to rectify the heating issues (we are in our summer 40 degrees c plus temps), apparently the 16 (Bs'?) have a larger capacity water pump and the car has larger radiators/fans.
If this can be solved there is a strong possibility that a NA 1.6 litre RENESIS will be "offered" in the new face lift which is scheduled for line production in early April.
The 1.6 DI's are for the "New' RX in 2013.
If not the existing 13B with "tweaked electronics for more performance"
and the suspension upgrades we know about will be the likely outcome.
But the larger engine is not dead in the new 2009 RX-8.
Interesting news..

Is the heating issue the result of having to cut the coolant passages narrowier to enlarge the displacement?

^^ yes, that is the exact reason Renesis 8...

Also..
I forgot to add this...as I was too excited!!!, sorry!!!...

Mick who has been a Mazda PM for nearly 20 years and has many contacts (obviously with the guys at Mazda Australia) believes that the new "type R" or even ...dare I say it...a 'Mazdaspeed 8 or MPS' version would have the 1.6 NA engine, with the other models the existing tweaked 13B, Why, you would have the extra ponies many want in the special version, but at a cost of higher fuel use.

IMO this is very plausible.

My thoughts exactly. Reliabilty has to be primary.

We have to keep in mind that the Mazda Techs here could just be testing the 16X in an RX-8 mule for future RX models.

I agree with your comment. I do not think we will see the 16x until the next RX car.

Sorry, but I wish Mazda would leave the 'tweaked' 13b in the RX8 and eventually discontinue it, and drop a true RX7 replacement wtih the 16x engine (330 HP at 2900 pounds or less) at a cost of 37-42k.

Let the the lower end sports car (Kabura??) do the low end work while the new RX coupe does the mid tier fighting. Mazda should keep in mind that BMW will drop a 135tii costing in the mid 40's within the next couple years and opt to fight that car, along with the Z, Cayman, Supra (if that ever comes)...
