Yes, it is sad that nobody wants to buy an RX-8.

I hope the CX-9 starts off well. I think they have another winner on their hands.

I hope and think the new Mazda 6 will be a sales success. It looks to be bigger and more powerful, which American buyers desire in midsize sedans.

Did you move? I thought that you lived in the Monterey bay area? I do and I see about 10 RX8 around the Monterey/Salinas areas.

I'm glad to see the CX having so much success. I think that Mazda hit the bulls eye with this vehicle, perfect timing. We now see that gas prices will probably never go to back to $2.00 a gallon, so alot of peps will be looking for smaller SUV.

Locally for me (not looking at national numbers, sales, or anything) there are more Evo 8's on the road than other recent Japanese sports cars, with the exception of the 350z(they are about as common as Mustangs). Evo 8's can be had for pretty cheap these days. For the same price of a used Rx-8 you get better performance and room. I see more Evo 8's on the road than Rx8. In the next few years, the Evo 8/9 will most likely be the premier high school kid car. They recently came into the market as well, and you bet that the kid with a fart can on his sentra would buy an EVO if he had the cash. Needless to say, the image of the Rx-7 and 8 of being cars that break down and etc. will definitely help the owners out in the long run, while EVO, STi, and other owners will have to deal with 17 year old kids asking how to "make the boost bigger." The DSM community now is a preview of coming attractions for the current EVO community.

 

The Mazda dealer near my office (NYC) has an RX8 with a huge "RX8 BLOWOUT SALE" written on the windshield. The last Shinka they had (white) was out in front for 28K..
Am I right to feel a sense of forboding?
...Please...please... let them build them long enough for me to get a Stormy Blue in 18 or so months when I'm rightside up on the loan! (Yeah, fingers crossed on THAT too)...

We may or may not have an RX-8 for years to come but it is a certainty that we'll have a rotary engine for a long time to come. Mazda even said so and is still working on making it better. That's really all I care about. It's the engine that originally brought me to the RX community.

 

It don't matter if Mazda discontinues the RX-8 or not to me either. As long as they keep making rotary engines, I'm fine.

I do care about a Mazdaspeed 8 or the twinscrew and AxialFlow superchargers finally being released as kits. Though, I'm hearing some stuff about the Blitz supercharger that has me a little bit interested. I take my hat off to Mazsport and PTP, as their Turbo kits are producing the numbers for the RX-8 to compete with upgrades from other cars near its class. Since I have the RX-8 Auto, I need the instant boost, so I'm waiting around on the new superchargers and not going turbo.

I would love for Mazda to do a redesign of the RX-8, come out with a new RX-7, or finally come out with an MS RX-8. If only so I could trade up or swap engines, if it were possible. Actually, it would be a very smart move, if Mazda did make an upgraded rotary engine that you could just drop into the "old" RX-8. I "almost" love my RX-8 as it now (I get OK gas mileage for an RX-8 and sports car...18 to 19 MPG/mix driving), I just want it to be a little faster in 0-60 to 1/4 mile (I've drove it at 140+ mph, so no complaints towards the top end).

It does not bother me, if the RX-8 is not so popular that every Tom, Dick, and Harry has one. I rather be a little unique and I rather people underestimate the speed and performance of my RX-8. I like it when people driving a Honda civic, family van, or family car think they can take me and instead I blow by them. With the supercharger, it will only make things easier and I can up my competition and surprise the hell out of some "punks" at red lights...hahahaha....

As for resale value, that does not interest me much because I like the car and will keep it around until a new version of the RX-8 or RX-7 comes out. By that time, with all my mods (MS kit, DVD player, supercharger, blah, blah...) and regardless of what other RX-8 re-sell for, I know I will get some decent money back (will just use it for the new RX-8 or RX-7 anyway) and I would have had lots of FUN (not just racing, but with interesting women).

Long live the rotary engine!!! With any luck, maybe Mazda might get things perfect the next time around.

If they discontinue the RX-8, the only other platform to put a rotary engine in is the Kabura... that'd be good, i'd rather have that than a RX-8 IMO=d

It'll never be that bad since there just aren't that many Evos to be had. It's kinda obscene what they're selling for used, at least a couple in my area... I saw a '03 with 29k miles go for 25,900 last month. For a few thousand more you could buy a new one. I'm not complaining though

 

Autotrader around here and prices range from 17k(75k miles A LOT) to 23k for 03's. When the EVO X comes out, the 8 will be dirt cheap. I certainly hope the STi/Evo community doesn't head down that road, but knowing how strong the 4G63 is from personal experience (slightly modded DSM w/ 145k), I know that the noobs will flock to it as opposed to a rotary.

I believe that Mazda would continue to build the RX8 without any changes for 8 years (they did the same with the FD). It might not sell in the US for that entire time......but it might in other markets (like the FD). The biggest factor to consider regarding the demise of the RX8 will be plant capacity. If Mazda needs more and more of the plant capacity for other models.....then Mazda would have to kill the RX8 or expand a plant. The question becomes, is keeping the RX8 worth the millions to billions Mazda would have to invest in plant expansion?

Maybe....maybe not. But sooner or later that discussion is going to take place in a Mazda boardroom......if it hasn't already.

This is an issue Toyota is dealing with right now. They can't even launch a new Supra to compete in the sports car segment without opening a new plant somewhere. They are running at 104% efficiency and can't fit another vehicle into production schedules. Obviously this is a good situation to be in......but it does influence product decisions when billion dollar plant investments are tacked on to the R&D budgets for new products.

 

I dont think the RX-8 exterior can last for 8 years. It needs a facelift. The RX-7 was different, it was beautiful, unique and futuristic looking at time of release. And it was a true sports car. Yes I agree with the plant capacity being a problem for Mazda, they cant even make enough Mazda3s, which is their most important bread and butter car.

We probably wont see a flagship sports car from Mazda before Mazda builds a new plant! And I'd hate to see Mazda use more of Ford's plants in NA. I understand they have quality control, just judging from personal experience, Mazdas made in NA are less reliable and feels cheaper than Mazdas made in Japan, same as some Toyotas I've personally seen. flame on tho, i have no statistics, wat so ever.

I hate to say it, but right now I'd like Mazda to focus on releasing a next gen market dominating Mazda 6 and Mazda 3.
