Media Reaction to the HP Reduction Story...
It will be very useful to us all and particularly non-Americans if this thread is used to post any press or TV stories on the hp reduction news that you find. Thanks.

good point lensman,
particularly in view of how sensitive the used car market is, if they're needing an incentive to get people to keep the cars, will the resuduals catch a cold?
i personally hope that the story doesn't get picked up in the UK
(free servicing would be a nice idea, but i don't see it happening over here.)

Automotive News has the following blurb:
By Mark Rechtin
Automotive News / August 25, 2003
LOS ANGELES -- Just weeks after the introduction of the RX8 sports car, Mazda North American Operations has revised its horsepower numbers for the car.
The manual transmission version generates 238 hp, instead of the previously announced 247 hp. The automatic transmission version creates 197 hp, rather than 207.
Mazda is offering RX8 buyers a $500 debit card and free maintenance for the length of the car's warranty. But if a customer is truly dissatisfied, Mazda will discuss repurchase options.

Am I reading too much into this, or does this last part not sound as straight forward as we have been lead to believe? It doesn't say "if a customer is truly dissatisfied, Mazda will buy back the car."

Mazda Says RX-8 Horsepower Overstated
Here's an interesting article on the HP reduction issue. The first to state a reason for the reduction.
"The spokesman says the difference comes from actual horsepower figures derived after emissions certification from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. The original horsepower figures, he says, were estimates developed prior to the actual EPA certification process."

I suggest that the inevitable discussion about this issue takes place on one of the existing bhp threads please. That way this thread will be clean(ish) for the stories.

The Canadian Automotive Network picked up the story. Their article starts out negatively but the second page ends on a positive note.

Mazda sold 242 RX-8's in Australia for the month of August.
This is the maximum allowable. Of the 8400 produced at the factory last month, most are sent to the USA & left for Japan.
Us poor Aussies are allocated a mere 900 2003 models till the end of the year.

USA Today has it, plus some good comparisons of other roll-out flubs:

local news station report
WBAL out of Baltimore ran a short blurb on the RX-8 last night. Only they goofed much of it. They started by stating that "Mazda Wants to buy back the RX-8s from the early buyers" and that the $500 / free maint was just an option if they buyer wanted to actually keep their car instead of letting Mazda take it back. Plus they said it wasn't 'as fast' for the reason. Mentioned up to 5% but never HP. I didn't like it. And... on the USA Today article - did anyone else *not* see anything in their letter about taxes being part of the buyback or did I read it too fast to see it?
