^^^^I agree that it is a sports car, but I also think that it is underpowered by today's standards and that is what bummed me about my 8 and why I turbocharged it.

You might consider the RX8 a sports car but really it is a cheap sports car, meaning it has an accessible price. Real sports cars are also very expensive, but then they have the power to back up their price.

I loved my 8 while I had it but man its amazing how easy I can sqeeze HP out of this evo and have a faster car for less money. Oh and Evo's also love curves.

 

Evo's are VERY nice. How much did you pick that up for?

 

I'm not just trying to nuthug RX-8s right now, but sports cars don't need to be overly powerful, or expensive.

I could go on, but there's no need. An RX-8 is a sports car. Is it underpowered? Yes. Does that matter much? Not really. It won't win many races (well, except for in the Daytona series where it does well against Porsches and Ferraris), but it is a lot of fun while it tries.

 

It's a sports car. I've never seen "A sports car has to have an average HP of xxx, with a 1/4 mile time of xx.x"

People just like to be critics.

im not saying its not a sports car, but to me its an affordable sports car

buy a porsche and thats a complete sports car, or a vette, or a lambo, or an audi R8, or I could go on

does it mean that the rx8 is not a sports car? no, but it fails in comparison to the others because it lacks power.

if the RX8 had a bit more power maybe something like mine felt with the turbo, it would be the perfect car.

that is my only criticism towards the car. The rest is perfect because at track days you can hang with more expensive cars, until you reach the straightaways.

 

That's about all it boils down to. You can't judge everything about a car by reading numbers on paper.

The rx8 is a sports car. The mustang is a heavy beast. The rx8 will out handle a mustang any day of the week. And the mustang may go faster in a straight line but there isn't much else it can do. The corvette is an impressive car for how much it costs. It's extremely fast and out preformes just about any car in its price range. As far as most of the other cars have been discussed in this thread, they're sports cars too, but the rx8 is defiantly one.

 

The Spitfire and TR6's are two of my favorite sports cars and I think if you talk to anyone who knows a thing or two they mention those cars as well.
Neither where anywhere close to fast but the were good road cars and massive fun to drive. True sports cars.


I think people do like to look at numbers at the end of the day because it's easy like “mash gas and don't turn” style driving.

Here's my take on what's a "sports car"from only the cars that I've owned...corvette=sports car...mustangs=sporty cars...audis=sporty cars...TR-6=sports car when it ran...Spitfire=biggest pile of mechanical crap with an electrical system designed by the Marxx brothers but hardly sporty much less "sports car''....RX-7s=sports cars...RX-8s=sports cars...Porche 911=sports car...Volkswagen Thing=sporty car but equivalent to the Japo boxes that masquerade as sports cars....who really cares about definitions? It's what a particular car makes "you" feel like that counts....

People don't understand . and i bet they never even took the 8 for a spin, if they did its like your in some kinda space ship from year 3000 lol

 

a sports car has to turn and handle above all else with some sexy sheet metal. The Mustang, Camaro, Challenger are pony cars. The EVO, STi are rally cars for the road like the old Mazda 323GTX, not to knock them but a Lancer or Impreza body doesnt say "sports car" to me at all. That said Id love to have an EVO8 or up and spent quite a while in the past modding the 4G63 motor in Eclipses and Talons which I do consider Sports cars b/c of the 2 door "sporty" bodies on them, though thier handling was garbage next to an 8. MS3, GTi, new STi, Mini, 323GTX would be "hot hatches" in my book. Vette, FordGT, Nissan GTR, 370, Viper, old Supra, RX7, Mitsu 3000GT, Eclipses, S2000, 911, boxster, all 2 door Ferrari, Lambos, R8 are sports cars b/c of the sexy bodies.

 

So now a sports car is defined by it's looks...?

What one person finds sexy, another person finds ugly. You can't have a definition based off of something that can be an opinion.

I think that is pretty good def. The 8 meets all the above other then seating requirement doesn't make much sense when you meet the other conditions of sports car. Any big burley engine can create torque it's how the car handles that torque that makes it a sports car.

 

I agree in some ways. RX8 is affordable. YES
Its underpowered. YES
FI'd its awesome YES.

But as for porsche = complete sports car..ha! You need to go out and drive some Porsches. Unless you pay big (huge) money for an uber Porsche get ready for disappointment......

 

well I drove a CaymanS and its not the fastest thing in the world but it has enough power and it drives amazingly well

 

I love the Miata vs Viper video. That is what most people dont understand about cars like the Miata and 8. What a car can do is not defined by HP alone. Just because one car may have much more HP than another doesnt automatically make it a better car. They all have trade-offs.
