the best news is the development of the direct injection rotary and front wheel drive rotary! this may mean rotarys in cars like the 3 and the 6.

the concept maybe the low cost entry level rotary?

Bern, Dan thanks for this info you guys rock!

If you look closely at the grill...along the top, there appears to be a very light gray section toward the outer edge on both sides...could this be organic LEDs? Just a thought about the headlights.

Either that, or it has IR night vision that displays on the windshield! That would be bitchin'! :D

I have to say though...from the front and sides, I like the design...but it does look like a hatchback, and for that, I'm not a fan. Give it a bit of a trunk, and I think it would be great...either way, even as is...I'd still very likely consider it.

Really unimpressive and boring like the Sassou concept they just did. It's kind of hard to believe this is coming from the same people who brought us the 3rd gen RX7. Even Nissan has concepts that have people gushing like their little pocket rocket hatch thing. Thank God Mazda has the CX-7 coming and thank you again Bern for providing us with the good news of Mazda's continued rotary engine development.
Paul.

I agree 100%. The body design is extremely bland and all folks can talk about are the lack of headlights. There's nothing innovative or original about the look. And the sides seem to have flame surface styling stolen from Bangle's BMWs.

As a rotary powered people mover, I'd give it a C. But if this is really suppose to be a sports car, it gets an F.

Mazda Motor Corp.'s concept car 'Senku,' a four-seater rotary sports car designed for mature drivers, is seen during a press preview in Yokohama, south of Tokyo, Tuesday, Oct. 4, 2005. The 'Senku' features an ultra-long wheelbase, minimal overhangs, a unique 'floating' appearance supported by large tires, and large 'flying wing' electric-powered sliding doors. The concept car will be exhibited at the Tokyo Motor Show that opens on Oct. 19. (AP Photo/Itsuo Inouye)

Thanks for the photos. The phrase "sports car designed for mature drivers" coupled with that sliding door makes me wonder if Mazda was going for a mini-van look.

I'm so disappointed, was hoping for a possible 4th gen RX-7-ish concept and instead we get this thing.

I've been told by several folks think BMW Mcoupe in terms of styling, alothough I don't see that here.

If they want to go with the four seater concept again, and not go with the RX8 layout, I can see how they could do a 4 seat coupe/hatch like that, but this doesn't really resemble that. I didn't like the Mcoupe design, but hey thats just personal preference.

To be honest, I really don't care what this think looks like, I care about the engine details. While I understand the concern of folks here worried that their next RX will be a RWD minivan, this thing looks so far out in terms of a concept, other than the face, I don't see it's styling cues making it to production.

Mazda will have to make an internal f'reaken air tight case for building another "sports coupe", so the styling will have to be good what ever it is.

I doubt highly that if this ever gets to production that it will look anything like this. First off the front end would absolutely change. There's no headlights or any other lights for that matter. The windshield is also at such an extreme angle that it is probably quite difficult to see out of. They would probably change this too. Of course changing that would completely change the shape of the roofline too. The sliding door is incredibly long for what access it allows to the interior. It actually slides back well beyond the rear of the vehicle. That's real nice in a parking garage where you fling it open and the car driving behind you takes if out. The interior is boring but we never see a concept car interior stay the same if it ever gets to production. Don't count on this ever making it to production. The changes that would require it to be streetworthy would be so extensive that it wouldn't even be the same vehicle when it was done.

The purpose of a concept car is not the same as a prototype. A prototype gives you a taste of what is on it's way. This vehicle was merely built to showcase new ideas such as their electric sliding door, their new rotary hybrid engine as well as other things. This is why it lacks lighting and possesses unusably long doors and sweeping windshield. Don't worry about ever seeing this on the road. You won't. However look for some of these vehicle features to appear on certain Mazda models in the future. Car manufacturers do this all the time to show off new things they've developed. I'm excited just to see a rotary mentioned anywhere.

Based off of that interior pic on rotarynews.com, I'm not seeing 4 seats in that car. The pockets behide the front seat on the FD were more of back seats than whatever that is in this car.

I believe more in the hybrid family car shown here http://www.mazda.com/publicity/relea...10/1005be.html
A new system that will monitor exactly the location of the rotors, sounds interesting too. No more flooded cars?

Actually there IS a 2+2 touring model in JDM. SUprised me when I saw one at the Mazda dealer a couple months ago... it was auto by the way.

Yup, in fact every RX-7 (1st gen, 2nd, & 3rd) was offered as a 2+2 in Japan.

But those rear seats in the Senku don't look like seats at all, more like a sliding board.

I was called by a focus group last week. I went to some location down town and they had a car there almost exactly like that, no name on it, they wanted to know what I thought of it. They had people coming in every 30 mintues.

The car they had there was a full size clay model. And a mock up interior made of plywood and plastic. It had a rx8 gauge cluster and pedals, and a mx5 e-brake. One of the questions was "who do you think makes this car."
