New RX8

Mazda for a small company is making a huge investment in a lot of changes at one time.
Its going to be an interesting time for them and the future will depend on the present results.
My soothsayer side says the rotary engined car is still possible, but every year it faces more and more challages. Performance?--hp/tq from other brands keeps going up and up. Reliability as well as gas milage also increases.
If you place a unproven 300hp rotary engine in a 3.2K lb car while others are putting in well known engine with 420hp in 3.5K lb cars , guess which one will sell based on performance?
It is almost impossible to get a 4 seater street car under 3K lbs without getting really expensive and since the rotary will continue to be hp/tq challaged --light wgt will have to substitute for power ( which is better anyway).
I see--if it happens-- a two seater coupe with the rotary and the wgt will have to stay at 2.7K or less.
I would LOVE to see the 16X in a Lotus with a twin clutch trans.
That is MY soothsayer hallucination

Until I read this post, it didn't even occur to me that the specs for the next MX-5 haven't been released yet either. With most of the focus on here about the rotary speculation, all I remember hearing is that the new MX-5 will be smaller and lighter than the current model.

I could see an mx5 roadster and an RX coupe.

There is a new rumor that the next gen Miata will be over 700 lbs lighter. If this proves true and the next gen RX-8 is based on the Miata, then we could be looking at a 2300 lb RX-8. That could make for a wildly fun car

^^^ yes I read this yesterday. This is the "GOAL" for Mazda engineers to reduce the weight of the current MX5 by 700lbs. they said the goal will probably not be met but probably will get it close, realistically like 2000-2100lbs. the goal is to get it as close to the 89' size and weight as possible with modern safety requirements.
Then they said IF and only if they decide to build a new RX-7,8,or 9 model what ever they will call it. they would be building it off of the mx5 platform. rather than building the mx5 off of the rx8 platform like they did with the current model.

a 2500lb rx-9 would be just fine

You know it occurred to me that the 16X could be ready to go already...BUT...they may not be able to release it until the sky active engines are out so the entire fleet meets the cafe standards going forward. They release it now, the fleet may not meet the requirements.
