I doubt they could use composite materials in more than a few critical spots if they want the price not to skyrocket, but they can always use the high strength steels that allowed them to shave weight off the Mazda 2 while retaining the same structural strength.

Exactly. If I'm not mistaken, I believe the freestyle doors effectively function as the b-pillar. While it's neat, I think the novelty has worn off and most people would settle for a 2+2 2-door for the weight benefit (read: performance and fuel economy)! Hell, I'd be fine with a 2 seater, but that's just me. Someone should start a pole thread on this if it hasn't been done already.

When and if the engine does finally make it into production, I'm curious how many people are still going to complain that it's too heavy, doesn't have enough power or torque, and has poor gas mileage? I'm also curious to see how many people complain because it doesn't rev to 18,000 rpms and the car doesn't come with a 5.75:1 rear end. No matter how good Mazda makes this engine, it will NEVER be good enough for some. They could build a 400 hp rotary that gets 30 mpg and some people would still complain that they didn't get more. Then the comparisons would come out as to why a GM LSX V8 engine is a better choice. I can see it happening now.
Keep in mind that if this engine does become a reality, we are really going to see the rotary return as a huge threat in racing. We'll see them dominate again, and again we'll see rules change to handicap them. That is my prediction and I'm sticking to it. I hope I can find this post again in 10 years! If an all peripheral port 13B can be made to hit 350 hp, an engine that is 23% larger could potentially (in a perfect world) hit 430 hp. Let's go racing!

Lets hope the 16X will bring Mazda back to LeMans. This is so many years away tho.
I just remember not too long ago, there was a discussion on "technical of the renesis" thread. We discussed on how to improve the rotary with direct injection and aluminum housings. Now we have it!, and more too, no one would have thought that Mazda was serious in increasing the displacement to 800cc!
The 16X RX-? Will run in Grand-Am GS instead of ST tho.
A low boost MSP 16X or a PP 16X(maybe barely, or not) can achieve the horsepower needed to compete in ALMS.
A PP 24X will be the better choice. Easy 600-700hp, like the R26B.
Thats all we need, we don't need a 4 rotor 32X, ALTHOUGH it'll have the same dimension of the R26B!! 1000hp........

I dont think a 24x can reach does power levels, but I do think it can get 550 hp or so

3.2L is too much displacement!! i cant even begin to imagine a rotary this big.
One of the problems the Audi has is.... too much torque, 850+lb/ft, maybe the torqueless-ness of rotary is a good thing at high horsepower.

About the X name of the new engine
Have you thought about why an X instead of a "c"?
Mazda names rotary engines with a 2 digit number, as a measure of the displacement, and a letter after it, to account for the shape of the rotor.
We have had "a" and particularly "b" for a long time which leds one to think that the next engine with different rotor ain dimensions would be named "c".
This is where speculation comes through. 2007 is a very special year in rotary history: the 40th anniversary of the first rotary engined production car. The development of the engine was accomplished by the famous "47 rotary engineers" and the project was called inside mazda.... PROJECT X.
The rotary engine developed 40 years ago, under project X, was a breakthrough. The new engine takes the name of the project and I wish it also inheritates the same spirit.
