petitt denied rolex entry for 456whp rx8

Just reading in dsport mag that worth at petitt built a carbon fiber rx8 (with 20b) which produces 456whp. it looks badass.

he consulted with rolex technical advisors every step of the way, but when he finished, they changed the rules.

That's some bullshit.

Can't have a superior rotary show up those Pontiac engines now can we.

couldn't find any online. i guess i could take a picture of the magazine picture. maybe i'll get around to it.

it looks like a carbon fiber 8 on racing slicks with a big custom wing. inside gutted with bracing added and some gauges and racing seats.

the wing, btw, which was designed by worth, can turn on an axis in the event of a spin to act as an airbrake. pretty cool.

With Pontiac going away, that won't be a problem anymore.
Grand-Am changed the rules for all the Mazda teams and they were able to comply. It shouldn't have affected just Pettit.

well kinda...
It more had to do with the Chassis design which was deemed an unfair advantage,,,
That coupled with SpeedSources tight nit connections with Riley chassis which is one of the inside chassis deisgners for the DPs was what dissallowed them in ....

This is pretty old new too,,, this was in the works several years ago....

Racing is pretty political.

Look how long it took the Japaneese to get into NASCAR

Political is an understatement...
But actually NASCAR now taking ownership of the ROLEX and KONI series will be for the better. NASCARs market strategy has made it the most popular sport in NA....
So hopefully some of that marketing genius will carry over...

Same type of political maneuvres when the 787B beat out the german mainstays in Le Mans. Rules change. And out you go you quirky little rotary engine. To this day, Mazda is the only Japanese mfg that has won the 24hrs Le Mans with the rotary. Mechanics mentioned that after the race when they tore open the engine, it seems that the rotary was in great condition and would've easily done another 24hrs Le Mans.

i agree with razz... everything has politics involved... even things like little league baseball. back in the days the taiwan team beat the crap outta the world series year after year after year. so what did the u.s. lobby for? to change the rules making the population criteria more stringent so as to permanently make taiwan ineligible to compete...

if u can't beat em, then find a way to disqualify em. that's the american way...

Mazdas appear to be pretty competitive in the Rolex series this year. I flipped over to Speed for the race in Virginia recently and at the time RX-8s were making up like 4 of the top 10 cars (with the speedsource one in second place, right behind the leader).

I have explored the Pettit car in person, and I must say, it is totally badass. I have some underhood pics of it somewhere.

I've also managed to see this one in person, and it's pretty badass as well:
