Rotary News: Breakthrough may give Rotary new life

Most of the accounts that I have read here say that you can't get a new rotary engine from Mazda, only Remans. Are you saying that they now need to have a supply of new engines available while they have supposedly been unavailable or do you know something to the contrary?
Mazda NAO only remans, once whatever new 'Made in Japan' engines are gone (no Series 1's left that are fully made/assembled in Japan).
They still have all new S2 short engines...with a reman (R00) part number.

This is and always has been the official Mazda Japan rule on complete assemblies once a car is out of production...it was back when I first started in MAZDA parts in the 1970's and still is.
'Quote' Mazda Japan..
Please contact Service Material Planning Gr if you need part number of Engine, Transmission and Cabin (Body Shell) Complete.
Please note we cannot supply these Completes if the production is no more available at time of your order.

Kind of "cheating" if you will, but from the US's perspective, there was a 9-11 year gap (not sure when cars showed up for each of the ending FD and starting 8), and I could see them doing the same thing again with the 8. Even if it is announced as "the end"....

No, just pointing out that there was probably gaps between the last of the FD and the RX-8. Not a full year gap, but likely a gap all the same. Unless you have information to the contrary? The "rotaries always in production" has always been a "for that year"
And US Federal law requires that manufacurers must have available / produce all parts for all cars sold here for at least 10 years past the last production date.
So that's at least a 10 year supply of engines that Mazda must be able to maintain.

They just ran out some of the 12a parts a while ago

No, I didn't say there will be another RX in 2013. I said we have till the end of 2013 for a rotary to be produced in order to avoid breaking the "in production every year" streak. There is no direct indication of when a new rotary will come out.

I wish I could find more information regarding the 'parts availability requirement'. I was told that it was now 5 years. We have seen a number of things for the Mazda 6 become obsolete including some sun visors for vehicles of model year 2005. Parts for the Mazda B series trucks are drying up even for 2006 model year. Customers are just steered to the aftermarket or salvage yards.

Please let me know where to look. One of my Mazda suppliers told me it had changed to 5 and then I made the observations of the parts that have ceased. The most common that have gone away are those Ford related.
But back to the current topic. I sure hope Mazda makes an announcement before long. Unfortunately we have to wait for MX-5 news prior to anything else. I think it's next to be revised.

yea I noticed a lot of parts are NLA from Mazda, even it's not "performance" part. and it's for 2004 RX-8
but it's funny though, some parts from FC is coming from Japan right now, I was about to get a Y-pipe, I called and ask them like "how long is going to take?", they said it's on boat right now so it will be at least 30-60 days.
