The Rotory will never die!!!

I just read this from autoblog.

http://www.autoblog.com/2009/07/15/g...lugs-in-favor/

Imagine the possibility of our rotory with this technology. Good thing Mazda is still partner with Ford. Hope Ford will share this with Mazda then the Rotory emission problem with be resolve!!!

I thought Ford sold all of its Mazda shares? (Or 99%)..

Also, I doubt a laser beam will resolve the rotAry motor's "emission problem".

Still cool though. Next thing you know, we'll be shooting flaming laserbeams out of our exhaust tips.

I dont think now is the time for Ford to be messing around with BS Ideas. Unless, it works, then this could be the perfect time for Ford to be messing around with Brilliant Ideas. GL to them, Ford is one of two American Companies I like... not the cars, but Nostalgic value.

I'm obviously no engineer, but why won't this work?

Well, besides the obvious sci fi feel to it.

Cool idea, but in the end how much does it really cost, and damn you I gotta watch that movie again. Just think when someone blocks you in, all you have to do is pull off your plug wire and cut there car in half.

Did you ever hear of Pulse Plugs? I read it in Road & Track.

Very first thing I thought of is "how much?" Until it is proven cost effective and reliable, you wont see it in a production vehicle. And what would happen if this "system" went haywire in your vehicle? Im sure it will cost a ton more to fix than a new set of plugs.

its too hard to predict where the light will go --- every combustion is different.

It will work but, not for at least another 5-10 years or so.

could be cool, i guess. I like the part about sending info back to the ecu and being distributed in particular areas for multiple combustions. neat.

That's a given. Saying the next rotary will be saved by it is quite a stretch...but in the future, with advancements in technology, I don't see how this can be a bad thing.

In theory, this is a great idea. Say, 3 lasers go out in their direction, ignite all 3 sides of the chamber...*top, mid, bottom*. That would be very helpful in helping with a full, unified burn, right?

Pulse plugs have a distinct problem of making it difficult for the trailing plug to go off at the right time. The pulse plug's ignition is so much faster than the normal plug, it means you need to decrease the intervals between them. Pretty sure this will have that problem too.... but then you wouldn't need the trailing plug as the laser spread would definitely ignite the whole chamber.

It doesn't matter where the light will go, if the rotor and chambers can withstand it, the laser will be spread enough to ensure complete ignition. The long compression chamber made it difficult for one spark to ignite everything, but a laser does not have the same restrictions.

So, a big plus of this would be less unburnt fuel.

^Which is why we had to move from peripheral exhaust ports, if I'm not mistaken?

I've always thought there'd be a way to use magnetrons from microwaves through a waveguide to ignite fuel spontaneously everywhere in the chamber rather than a spark plug. This would mean no flame front travel issues and very little total timing needed. A lazer with a beam splitter could work too I guess. I've suddenly got images from the early to mid 80's movie, "Real Genius" running through my head.

I spoke with an engineer for vrotor.se that are developing plasma spark plugs, that will be interesting and they are already in R&D stage with promising results.

Im already their guinea pig for another product and I got their attention for the Rotary and they where really interested to test the plasma plugs on a rotary also.

May not help with emission problems, but it could help resolve flooding issues...

Plus you would be able to use your RX-8 as a laser pointer for a presentation!
