Mazda RX-8 Is The New Company Car

Tax Sports Car Champion - Part One

Company car drivers are set to reap financial rewards by choosing the tax-busting ‘low price high-spec’ Mazda RX-8 when it goes on sale in September.

The all-new four-seater sports car is being positioned against performance derivatives of saloons and coupes from major manufacturers and this gives it an edge among other sports cars in the company car stakes.

As a result the £20,000 ‘standard power’ Mazda RX-8 pumping out 192 PS and the £22,000 ‘high power’ derivative producing 231 PS are the tax-efficient choice for company car drivers when compared with rivals from manufacturers such as Audi, BMW, Honda and Mercedes-Benz.

Designed with both fun and functionality in mind the Mazda RX-8 with its 1.3 litre rotary engine is a high-performance sports car featuring a unique freestyle door system allowing easy access to the rear two seats with comfortable seating for four adults.

Standard equipment on both models includes 18-inch alloy wheels, ABS with Electronic Brake Distribution, driver, passenger, side and curtain airbags, climate control air conditioning and a BOSE Premium Audio sound system with nine speakers and a six CD auto-changer.

Jeremy Thomson, Mazda’s fleet and remarketing director, said: ‘There is no doubt that the Mazda RX-8 is a unique high-performance sports car. However, one of the key features of the vehicle is that it is a true four-seater sports car and, therefore, we are positioning the vehicle against coupes and saloons from other manufacturers.

‘I expect the Mazda RX-8 to be both aspirational and desirable in the company car parc where image counts. Its design – including room for four adults and plenty of luggage – means that unlike traditional coupes there is no compromise on space.

‘As a result of that market positioning, and the ultra-competitive price of both models, the Mazda RX-8 is a tax winner. Not only is the driver reducing their tax bill by choosing it but the Fleet Manager is saving their company money by choosing the Mazda.’

The 40% tax paying company car driver choosing the ‘standard power’ Mazda RX-8, which returns 26.2 mpg will pay £231.17 a month in benefit-in-kind tax despite the car having a CO2 emission figure which puts it into the 35% tax bracket in 2003/04.
It is Mazda RX-8’s high specification and low P11D price* which give it its tax advantage.

For example, the 40% tax paying company car driver of the BMW 325 Ci Sport, which also pumps out 192 PS, carries a CO2 tax liability of 27% (217 g/km). However, with a P11D value of £27,730 the high rate taxpayer will pay £249.57 a month – an extra £18.40 a month or £220.74 a year over the RX-8.

However, even if some fleets do choose to position the Mazda RX-8 against vehicles such as the Audi TT Quattro 1.8 T (180 bhp) Coupe with a CO2 figure that puts it in the 29% tax bracket, a significantly higher P11D value of £23,930 means the Mazda RX-8 retains its tax champion status.

Meanwhile, the 40% tax paying company car driver choosing the ‘high power’ Mazda RX-8, which returns 24.8 mpg and is in the top 35% tax bracket, will pay £254.50 a month in benefit-in-kind tax.

But the tax bill is £22.58 a month or £270.96 less per year than equivalent powered Honda S2000, which costs £5,000 more than the Mazda RX-8, and is a massive £35.75 a month / £429 a year less than the Audi A4 3.0 quattro Sport, which is less powerful.

The ‘high power’ Mazda RX-8 returns equally impressive tax-winning figures against the likes of the Mercedes-Benz C 320 SE sports coupe and the BMW 330 Ci Sport as well as the equivalent Audi TT and Porsche Boxster.

This is a very interesting way of putting a spin on the positives and disregarding the negatives.
I for one intend to get the RX-8 and will be ordering in a week or two's time once I have clocked up the necessary milage to reorder.
I personally can only find one positive in the RX-8 as a company car (apart from the obvious)and that is the low retail. That said though by the time I have added mica paint and leather I am back at the same Taxable value as my current BMW 325 Ci.
The negatives for me ar 35% CO2 rating bearing in mind a 325 or 330 are around the 218g/l,even the impressa is only a 29% on the Co2 the real killer though is that on paper it is a 1.3 engine and as a result i will get reimbersed very poorly on my fuel used.

Hope its worth it

high tax for the amount as a % of value. Maybe that's why it is so cheap?
