RX-8 Video Reviews by Top Gear & Fifth Gear

http://gear.viper007bond.com/

These are the full episodes so the files are huge.

The RX-8 did put up the exact same time as an M3 and 350Z around the Top Gear track.

My takes after viewing the review of the RX-8 by Top and Fifth gears:

1st, Fifth gear, I don’t think Tiff thinks very highly of the 8. Like someone on this board mentioned, Tiff is a race car driver, he appreciate sportscar, he would probably jump into any performance cars and trash them around the track if he can gets his hand on one. And now, a RX-8 standing right in front of him, all he said was he likes the styling and then drove it around the country side. If he don’t have anything nice to say about the performance of a performance car, he’ll talk about it’s styling.

2nd, Top Gear, I think Top Gear is a little bit of a sell out. If anyone would watch their few recent programme, one would realized that beside JC himself, there are 2 other blokes as well. Everyone would have their own favourite. In that way no car would walk out a looser. E.g. JC would praise the 8 and the other guy would prefer the 350Z. Depends on what car you support, you’ll tend to pick up the good points, thus every body will get some kind of good ratings from TopGear.

Just my 2c

TiffN And JC realy hate each other, and often take opposing views just because.

Fifth Gear is what Top Gear USED to be, and Top gear is a new program.

Fifth gear is motoring journalism, notice how Tiff gave more usefull information than JC (albeit not 100% correct IMO) and JC just wanted to hoone round a track and be 'one of the boyz'.

Bizzare as JC is the journalist, and Tiff is the racing driver... Would have been intresting to see the RX-8 vs the 350z (zed for sure) round their track.

I presume you're kidding, right? After all, Z IS pronounced "zed" everywhere in the world EXCEPT in the US. Even in Canada, it's "zed".

Gordon

But Gordon, the US is the center of the universe! Nothing they do is wrong.

Do you mean 'zed' or 'zee'? Just "Z", as this whole silly point illustrates, could be pronounced either way... If Japan pronounces it 'zee', it's only because the Americans forced them to, after WW II! :D

Gordon

seriously... just watch the damn video. apparently, some of you haven't even watched the whole thing. If you did, they actually brought the rx-8 into the track and timed it just as fast as the M3 and the 350z. (and the argument with 'zed'? please...)

The main point is that Jeremy Clarkson hardly ever says that a car is very good. For him to first say that he is pretty sure that it is the "best car he has driven this year" and then, despite the tyres in the wet, to say that this car is "VERY, VERY GOOD" means a lot on British TV.

At least Tiff's favorite car to throw around the corners is the Miata. So he still is in the Mazda camp :D

I thoroughly enjoyed both of these reviews... take the time to download them both - they're worth it. The Top Gear review is so positive that it almost can't be taken seriously... perfect if you're having buyer's remorse.

Sorry to have to comment on the "zed" thing, but these reviews point out how many language differences there are in automotive terminology. Bonnet, petrol, coupe[ay], "brake" horse power. . . what the heck is a "saloon?" Is that what the Americans call a sedan? Is it that common to call a car "pretty?" Is Dr. Wankel's name that funny? (Yes, I understand the reference).

Interesting to note that the British version of the car suffers from the hand-brake being on the right side - I suppose Mazda didn't take the time to move it to where it is in the U.S. version, which seems like where it should be - although I'm sure that one quickly gets used to it. The Fifth Gear review is right about the "digital watch" display. I personally don't like the digital speedometer, so I thought it was interesting that the Fifth Gear review pointed it out as a positive design choice. The "Z" is a very cool car (however you say it).

Again, take the time to get these files... big fun.

Megareds Glad you can appreciate the beauty of the proper queens english.

As for the hand-brake, as its a Japanese car and they are also right hand drive (the correct side by the way), thats where they intended it to go. It makes it quite convienent for hand-brake turns!

Cheers
