RX-8 whupazz on 330i
http://www.motorsport.com/news/artic...ANDAM-GRANDCUP
Will Turner, #95 H&R Springs/Turner Motorsport BMW 330i:
"The car ran really good all day although the BMWs still can't match the speed of the RX-8. It takes a track like this to really put their speed into perspective. We were up there and the car as good even as the tires wore. But in the end we needed fuel and they didn't. We're looking forward to Virginia but we're going to need a little extra luck to win the battle."

Lol, bookmark this one folks, it's the only time you will hear of the 8 winning something because of fuel :p
Where can I find lap times etc for GrandAm?

Wow, that is crazy, but sweet. I watched an RX-8 lose an enduro a couple of weeks ago due to fuel shortage. Now a BMW driver admitting a 330i can't match the speed of an RX-8, thats worth its weight in gold. I'm printing this out and taking it to my next BMWCCA meeting/HPDE.

If you want to read about the race win from the SpeedSource RX-8 team's perspective: http://rotarynews.com/node/view/684
They drove the car a certain way (whatever that means) so they wouldn't have to pit for fuel again.
Actually, a stock 330i is close, but not a match for the RX-8 on the track, no reason why the race cars should be any different. My old e36 M3, which had a similar engine to the current 330's 3.0L, got about the same MPG that my RX-8 gets. Had no complaints then, have no complaints now.

Bimmer fanboi? hardly. Any car make fanboi, nope.
Like I said, I know nothing about GrandAm. The title of the thread made me think that this doesn't always happen. I haven't seen mention of this type of thing before on the site, and I figure I would have. I think I saw one thread about laguna maybe. As well, surely this wasn't the first race of the GrandAm season. What am I too think. That's why I asked where I can read about laptimes etc. So I guage the performance of both cars. The assumption that maybe the BMW's win alot and are carrying a lot of reward weight this past race isn't far fetched if you consider what I just said. Again, I said "I don't know" and "for all I know" indicating I was wondering.

Their exploits are posted about on a regular basis in the RX-8 Competition (Racing) section. One of the drivers, David Haskell, is even an RX-8club.com member.

I don't make my way down to the competition section to often. Everytime I do its autox this and autox that, not my taste. A search of SpeedSource revealed plenty of threads to wade through. Thanks.

The racing is actually fairly even. On any given day, the 330i, RSX and RX-8 could all possibly win. While the SpeedSource Mazda team is currently in points lead, the championship will still be decided in the next and final round. Last year the SpeedSource team was actually behind in the points coming to the final round and ended up taking the title. So the racing is close, unlike say F1.
The fact that the RX-8 took the championship in '04, it's first year right out of the box, was really a big accomplishment.
The RX-8 is also doing quite well in a Euro endurance series, where it also has chalked up 5 class wins thus far. That series limits the RX-8's class hp to 230, so the car is basically running in stock engine form and against much lighter cars in its class. (Euro RX-8s are rated at 231ps/228hp)

So to answer BlueEyes's other question under the "RX-8 Discussion" area, yes the RX-8 does very well both on the "Track" and in AutoX.

It's almost like Will Turner said that just so I could put it in my signature... It also sounds like something the BMW guys were saying about me at the track last weekend

The 8 just loves the road courses with the twisties.

At the Barber race earlier in the year, I saw the 330, RSX-S, and RX-8 swap the lead several times. #70 finished it first though!

Although they didn't win the recent 24 hour race at Silverstone England, Mazda seems pretty happy that the Renesis engine showed how reliable it is in endurance race form by having several cars finish strongly in the race.
