Yes I do, but not 5 months ago...

Then there is the (PRHT What a dumb name)I will call it (like the rest of the world) the
MX-5 Roadster Coupe, but, I will concede there are probably supply issues with this one, I know there's around a 3 month wait in the UK and other parts of the world.

The Miata sold 370 in July 2005 in North America. The first third generation MX-5 was supposedly delivered in August 2005.

The Miata was down 14.3% in 2004 from the year before, up 5% in 2005, and up 72.4% in 2006. Right before the new model was released it was down 36.9% from the same time the year before. The RX-8 was down 38% in 2005 and down 36.3% in 2006.

I don't contend that these numbers necessarily mean anything. But I, probably someone you would probably refer to as a "doomsayer", think that it's clear that the sales of the 8 will continue to fall until a remodel is done just like with the Miata. It just seems weird that they're waiting until MY 2009 (from what I've heard) to do so. I really hope that it's something special to wait that long.

The MX5 NB problem was due to the factory fire. Mazda choose to stop making the MX5 early and only build RX8s after the fire leaving dealers unable to get any MX5s for six months.

Actual Numbers MNAO Sales onlyYTD Decembers 2003 to 2006 inclusive

RX-8........Miata/MX-5
2003
12,346...................10,920

2004
23,690.....................9,356

2005
14,673.....................9,801

2006
9,343......................16,897

TOTALS
60,052 RX-8's..........46,974 MX-5's

Since it's release there are more RX-8 owners than MX-5 in the same 4 year period.

13,078 more RX- 8's owners than MX-5's to be accurate.

Sales increase 2005 because of the New NC MX-5 Model.
These sales numbers in North America are very similar and consistent when compared to Total Mazda Production for the rest of the world.

We agree that when an update for the RX-8 occurs that it will lift sales as the new MX-5 upgrades have done over its long life.

From what I have heard the new RX-8 (same basic body shell with freestyle doors) will be announced at the 07 Tokyo Motor Show late this year for MY2008, this would give the RX-8 until 2012 when its any body's guess on its future.

My belief it wont be in its present form...engine or body...

The Ujina factory fire also affected RX-8 production as they only come from the Hiroshima plant. There was MX-5 (NB) inventory in many countries, Mazda was just gearing up for the NC when the paint plant fire began.
Mitsubishi Motors help Mazda paint some body shells.

It seems like everyone is coming out with a new performance car around that time. Camaro, Challenger, Evo, STI, Mustang, 350z.

Should be good times.

I imagine they are going to do a new 6 first since it's the oldest in the lineup and they don't want to steal thunder from the 6 with a new 8 which may be why they are waiting.

while the resale would likely go up OVER time, it ultimately points towards a failing product in one way or another. If something is a hit, it wouldn't make any sense in any way to discontinue it. The only exclusion to that would be limited edition and quantities of specific makes.

But that's just splitting hairs.

They only sold ~10K FD's in the three years it was sold in the US. They still made the RX8. They've sold >60K RX8's in 3 years. That sounds like a success story to me. Why would anyone think they would discontinue it?

The RX-8 ranked 6th in the Premium Sports Car category in terms of total sales for 2006 with 5.52% of the market (a decline of 1.86% over 2005). It was beat by the Corvette, 350Z, G35, 911, and SLK (in that order).

The MX-5 ranked 5th in the Sports Car category in terms of total sales for 2006 with 5.44% of the market (an increase of 2.42% over 2005). It was beat by the Mustang, Eclipse, Solstice, and Tiburon (in that order).

I would expect an RX-8 replacement next year. Although I still wish the turbo RX-7 made a comeback

You need a password to get to the data, and since my company pays a ton of money for it, I am pretty sure I shouldn't be giving out too much of the information. But if you are interested in a quick fact or two, send me a PM and I can probably look it up
