Actually if you go to the NTSB website and read the complaints, all it proves is that there are a bunch of bitches that own the 8. Complaining about DSC in winter (bet they had stock tires on), bitching about flooding, gas mileage, etc...

The NHTSA database is virtually worthless as far as statistical validity. It's no different than this or any other web forum. Anyone can post and believe me there are people that go on there and flame away.
You don't have to own the car and there is no proof required to post anywhere you want.
As I recall, back in 2003 when I was planning to buy my 8, I checked the NHTSA database and I found that there was one guy who had a problem with an ancient 626 and he posted hundreds of complaints under every Mazda model. He didn't even change his complaint. He just cut and pasted the same information about his 626 over and over again. Probably sat in front of his TV and flamed away.

Don't buy into those numbers much, the whole thing seems a little shady and the numbers don't really mean squat. Don't forget this info is brought to you by a couple seemingly slimeball lawyers trying to make money.

I believe Mazda has address much of the cold start/flooding problems already. My 2005 has never experienced this problem. I'd probably side with the dealerships as far as the clutch complaints go. My guess is the projected numbers are way off. ...unless more high heels get stuck in the left side foot rest.

Yeah, more like a lawyer's list of people who must have money to burn on a frivilous lawsuit. They figure anyone who can make the payments on those cars can afford to pay a shark to punish the comapny for doing business with them. ******* bottomfeeders.

Actually if you go to the NTSB website and read the complaints - there are only 35 of them. WTH - that's sure one problematic car LOL, 35 complaints out of how many cars sold???? And with a 2nd look - I note that several of the complaints are duplicates - exact same VIN for example, exact wording the same like they hit the submit button more than once - idiots.
What a joke - that lawyer 'lemon' site is inciting, not revealing anything.

"High Performance Cars" = "High Performance Problems". Also note that those are "2005 Projected Complaint Numbers".
I bet most people don't drive a Toyota Camery or Honda Accord near as hard as they drive an RX8, 350Z, or WRX.

I sure as hell don't. I don't even know what flooding is in a fuel-injected engine. I know how it happens with carbs, though. Any tips or is there a good summary somewhere?

Complaints = lemon? I thought a lemon is a car that keeps having the SAME problem over and over? But...I did not read it...I felt insulted since my 8 has had NO issues at all.

I read the 35 complaints on the NHSTA site from 2004 and the first one was on a Tribute and the others mostly dealt with flooding. When I did a search for 2005 not a single complaint using Mazda as a make was shown. RX8 was not a selection choice.

Listen, the RX-8 does have a somewhat higher than average ratio of complaints (probably alot of it related to the flooding issue), so this shouldn't be dismissed. Whether this is due to driver error or poor design is debatable, but it's probably a combination of the two. I took this into consideration when I bought mine since I have always driven ultra-reliable Toyotas and Hondas, but decided the risk was worth it since I got a great price and it will be nice to have something more fun to drive. I figure there's a good chance I will have no problems, and I plan to follow all the precautions so that my car will hopefully never flood and I will always be able count on it.

My favorite complaint:
THE DUMMY PEDAL ON THE LEFT HAS A DESIGN FLAW WHICH ENABLES HIGH HEELS TO BE TRAPPED BETWEEN THE PEDAL AND THE FLOORBOARD. MY FOOT HAS BEEN TRAPPED FORCING ME TO STALL THE CAR AND PULL OVER FIVE LANES ON THE FREEWAY AND OFF THE ROAD TO REMOVE MY FOOT. THIS IS A HUGE SAFETY ISSUE THAT MAZDA DOESN'T SEEM TO WANT TO ACKNOWLEDGE! THIS WILL AFFECT WOMEN WHO WEAR HIGH HEELS AND DRIVE A STANDARD MAZDA RX-8.*AK
