Is the RX8 right for me?

Hey,
Sorry if i sound ignorant but take a break i just joined

Ive been searching through this board for a couple of weeks now and I'm really interested in buying an RX8. ATM i can buy one for 13k thats fully equipped with 60k kilometers. I'm either looking for a black or a pearl white color. And a 6 speed manual. Also is the 04-05 a bad choice?

Anyway, the problem is, does it cost a lot to keep an RX8? Like, would i have to take it to the garage very often to do a check up for the coils? I know about the flooding issue(which is easily avoidable) and know what to do if i shut it off on a cold start. Because i dont want to have any issues with the APEX Seals ( I know the renesis is a very reliable engine compared to the FD's). I keep hearing issues with the car, that is why im a bit nervous for buying it. Any advice for changing stuff (coils, clutch, ignition, etc) on the car is greatly needed ! :D

Ive never driven one but it sounds sweet and heard of great reviews about the car.
I currently own a 2 door honda civic (which runs great at 260k!) and going to sell it to have the rx8.
BTW can this car run on 89 octane? Isnt the recommended 91?

Any advice is welcomed!

THX.

Mods can you move this thread to the general discussion i got too excited and put it in the wrong place .SORRY! :D

no, just make sure if you go that route, all the TSB's are performed and the car was well maintained. Id choose an 05 over an 04.

Coils are recommended every 30K I believe. SOme people change theirs as much as every 20K, mine havent been changed for 50K and is still running great.

I wouldnt worry about apex seals, we have members on the forum who are at 160,000 + miles; you can also premix which will help lubricate the seals to prolong life.

Maintain it, redline it, and it will be good to you. There have been a few lemons, but most of the 'bugs' are worked out and the failing engine craise is dying out. Also our engines have a 100K miles warranty on the core.

Members here use 87 with no problems, I recommend premium though; thats just me.

i went from a mustang g.t that had every mod besides a turbo or supercharger, and i love the rx8 - i got the 6spd - you gotta gt the stick - i love everything about it - handles great- feels great - i drive it the way it should b driven - red line often - it loves to go ffast - go test drive one - trust me - any sales guy will let u test drive it - the used car market is so crappy right now - just tell him that your not sure if you want one - thats all - i think youll love it - but test the 6 spd - it was my first stick - ive been putting the cheap crap in it - and its been fine - i added oil 1 time in the 4 months ive had it - and i love it - good luck

Well basically, I just want this car to be reliable. I've read many SO CALLED problems with the car. I just dont want to be regretting it when i buy the car. i really dont want to be screwed if i buy it..
Im still trying to figure out the rotary engine in this car and the things i have to watch out for. Is there anything else i should watch out except for the flooding issue and revving the car at 3 or 4k if i shut it off on a cold start.
How reliable is it though?

The car is reliable if you take care of that, thats the simple truth. Things will always break and that happens with any car but as long as you make sure everything that was recalled and keep up it will be good. I got mine back in like Feb and hasn't given me one problem (besides the coils that were replaced).

Maintain it and you're golden.

ha...PM Wing5. he's been one of the most unlucky 8 owners. he has to take it in all the time - for a different reason every time. he can let you know what you should look out for, as he has experienced it all.

The rx-8 is a great car but it is one that you need to stay on top of. If you do not then it can bite you in the ***. If you take care of it then you should get many happy miles out of it. Having said that it is not a Honda and it is likely you will not be as trouble free.

You got to do your hw on the car you decide to get, some run fine while others dont. Also, make sure you have some warranty so if something does show up you are covered (I am talking about general warranty, not only the 8y/100k). I personally would pass on the 60k car.

If I were you I would keep the civic and get the 8 as a second car.

I've only had my 8 for six weeks or so, after lusting for it for years, and I LOOOOOVE it, butI wish I still had my Acura Integra for rainy days. I spun out on a wet road and had to replace a tie rod and wheel bearing already -- couldn't believe how different it behaves on wet v. dry road. Then again, I have zero experience with a rear wheel drive freakin jet rocket lol

Gawd I love this car

Oh i forgot to give you the link. Oh and i forgot to say that i have a 04 (although only used in 2005) mazda 6 gs v6 auto.

Here is the link: http://montreal.kijiji.ca/c-cars-veh...QAdIdZ70904499

BTW it's kilometers not miles. So 63000km is 40k miles.

Also i never really abused the civic when i bought it. It was terrible when i got it but i did a flush, change the oil, cleaned the injectors, Springs, shocks, etc Now it's running great at 160k miles.

Basically this is a car that i should go for maintenance before the indicated time right?

Are you still running the OE tires? The OE tires are not good in wet/cold/snow.

missed the 60k kilo...that is almost the exact mileage I got mine with, and the same color.

I do all the repairs when the manual says, and use what they recommend...plugs, fluids, etc. Change oil every 3000 miles.

Except the oil, I go for 5w-30 conventional (bc the rest of the world is recommended to except US) but that is another discussion in itself.

Basically I looked it over with my dad (2 sets of eyes), Carfax, test drive (wound it out), came back test drove again (so I didnt impulse buy the first time), then too it home! Like I said before keep the civic if you can, im looking to get a beater when I get out of school.

Yes, I haven't done a thing with it yet, not tires, strakes, nothing yet, but I figure I'll be putting snows on in a month and I'll just let these tires go then. They'll have 30K on them by then. I'm open for suggestions! I guess I'm getting Blizzacks for the winter.

I have a lot to learn!

I bought my car at 18 and got ripped off cause I went to a dealer but point it I used to drive a cavalier 4dr sedan that gets like 20-35mpg. Which was amazing compared to what the 8 gets.

Im a daily driver to school/work I put about 30-50miles a day and the car only gets about 210-250Miles on a full tank.

What im saying is this car is really bad on gas so i would say to keep your honda and commute with it and use your 8 as your fun=)

I love the car for it's looks inside and out, but hate the power ..16mpg lol

LOL you mean fuel economy I used to have a 2001 4dr auto cavalier! Too bad my bro totaled it. I really miss that car though.
Anyway I already know its not that good on gas, i think im going to put 89 octane if the car doesnt knock.

My civic can get 47mpg average! so I get more than 410miles(6**km) to the tank. Well Im sick of having the civic and want something really nice too.

Is there a noticeable difference for 5w30 compared to 5w20 in the RX8?

I'd avoid any cheap RX-8s especially from the Quebec, the chop shop capital of Canada and home of the unwanted recovered stolen cars in North America.

The car looks & handles great.

It has no power for the ****** gas mileage it gets.

If you keep the car stock you should be able to get 100k+ miles out of it as long as you maintain it.

If you put a turbo or supercharger on it, plan to replace the engine before that.

I love my 8. If you learn to drive it, you will have a lot of fun.

Kinda bad gas mileage, but I just figure, I'm not buying the car for that. Although whenever Premium went over 3.50 a gallon I switched back to Regular unleaded. I really have had no problems, but do prefer the higher octane of Premium. I've

Maintaining the vehicle really isn't that hard. Just think of all the people on here. Most of us have 8's and some still drive their 04 that they bought brand new.
