RALEIGH, N.C. - A speeding car went airborne as it crossed a highway exit bridge, crashing to the ground 58 feet below and bursting into flames late Saturday. Four high school students were killed, officials said.
The victims were seniors at Wakefield High School in Raleigh, principal Stephen G. Takacs said.
The car, a 2004 Mazda RX-8, took an exit bridge over Interstate 440 and hit a concrete barrier, police said.
The car skidded along the barrier for 410 feet before rising over it, flying 224 feet forward and dropping to the ground, where it rolled and burst into flames, police said.
The victim's identities were not immediately released.

Police identify car crash victims
Raleigh police have identifed the four Wakefield High School seniors killed in a weekend auto accident.
They are:
-- Baker Sterling Wood, 18, who drove the 2004 Mazda RX-8.
-- Steven George, 18, who was the front passenger.
-- Anthony Bostic, 17, who was the right rear passenger.
-- Timothy Steinberg, 18, who was the left rear passenger.
A score of counselors and psychologists came to Wakefield High School this morning. Principal Stephen Takacs said that by 10 a.m. at least 150 students had been seen, he said.
"We're saddened by the loss of these students who were an active part of the school," Takacs said this morning. "My greatest concern has always been what happens on weekends."
Four counselors followed the schedules of the four victims to talk to their classmates. "It's a somber, sad group," said Terry Snyder, lead psychologist for Wake County schools.
The crash happened after the school played a Saturday night basketball game in Greenville. After the game, Wood and his friends piled into a 2004 Mazda RX-8. The boys cruised west toward Raleigh on the newly opened U.S. 64/264 Bypass.
The driver lost control of the Mazda sports car just before 11 p.m. on a curved bridge where the bypass meets the Beltline. As the driver reached the curved bridge, Raleigh police say, the sports car was traveling between 105 and 115 mph.
The car slammed into a three-foot-high concrete wall and skidded along the barrier for more than 400 feet before flying over it, said Jim Sughrue, Raleigh police spokesman. Police said the car skidded up and over the concrete barrier before crashing to the ground 58 feet below.

You just summed it up right there, and it seems that no one steps forward to tell them they are getting stupid. I knew that when I was 18 if my parents found out I did 100+ mph they would "jerk a knot in my ***", but now it seems kids don't have anything to fear. They will learn one way or another it looks like. Maybe this made a point to the other kids at that school.
