Actually, it was just a popularity contest - ability had absolutely NOTHING to do with the results. Yeah, they had editors, select readers, and Leno offer their comments and opinions - but those all meant exactly zero.

Remember, it was the READER'S CHOICE awards - the ranking was a result of votes on the R&T web site, and all the performance and impressions they reported were not factored at all. All it means is that the Subaru community did enough ballot-box stuffing to take the win. We didn't do quite enough ballot-box stuffing for the win, but still took 2nd!

Regards,
Gordon

Good point Gordon. Yes, it was "Reader's Choice."

Still good to hear all the opinions on the top two cars in a little more detail.

Yep, that's pretty much what I said back on the first page.

Honestly, I don't waste time watching any of them... However, I do have tremendous respect for Leno's car smarts. Both his collection and his driving experience in all sorts of cars is phenomenal. He's a total car nut. It was cool having him on the show.

It s a tie for me - I'm either going to buy a Z or an RX-8. I was unaware of the problems associated with the RX-8's flooding problem. I have driven 2 models of both cars, and like them both. I am going to purchase in August 04, so I'm learning all i can about both vehicles. I have owned 2 Rx-7's in past. how pervasive is this flooding problem anyway?

No flooding here. I understand though that flooding was an issue with the 7's too and you say you owned them. Did you experience problems then?

Hey guys, as far as racing and perfomance comparison goes. My father told me a story of a race that involved an RX7 and a Porsche. The RX7 driver teasingly stated he would win. The Porsche driver came back with a remark that a Mazda would never beat his Porsche. Then during the race, the Mazda passed the Porsche and then accelerated on, shattering the Porsche's windshield with the shrill scream of the rotary.

Have you heard this? He says he read it somewhere as a true story. That is wild.

Soooo many opinions... Simply stated, If you haven't road tested the RX8, don't blab about apples and oranges an online stats...The 8's most outstanding feature is its chassis/handling, we all know its a little emissions choked, it will lose light to light exchanges when left stock, but on a track it beats cars with 100+ HP/weight advantages...To all non 8 beleivers: the 8 has a grin factor of 9 when behind the wheel, drifting a 50/50 balanced car has to be tried to be understood! The 350 beats you up, the Honda's styling is 2y old, and I won't spend alot more money on a boobaru rally car to drive paved roads...All talk would end if only the 8 had the 280 HP they rumored before it came out... PS: no disrespect to the Z or the boob..lol ...Just defending my 60 payment wonder...

I agree with you for the most part....heck even I would have bought an 8 if it had 280hp.

I love it when rally noobs think it's some offroad event. Have you ever heard the term tarmac, it's pretty common stuff on rally stages...

This true story was part of an article in the premiere Mazdasport magazine that was distributed in January. (I think it was January... time is flying!) It was a Baja closed highway speed event. (Kind of like the Silver State Classic) Article said the FC was still audible at the starting line ten minutes after it left. Keep in mind this car was travelling in excess of 180 mph.

I second that. I wonder which of the cars Jerry Seinfeld would have picked though

Zthang why don't you go out and buy a RX8 and Blitz SC. I think the would equal the cost of a 350Z track. If not then it would be decently close.

STi good car
Rx8 good car-good performance-great sytling-good practicality
GT3 awesome car
350Z decent car

There you have it, the results of my mind are in. I would take the 8 over the STi, but that doesn't mean the Sti doesn't kick as* in performance, but is only a notch above one of Bangles creations for styling and it has good practicality. 350Z is ok, just not too practical for the performance, but has good performance and decent styling. Porsche GT3 is not too practical, but has the awesome performance and good styling...

Rod, The 8 doesn't flood for no reason, only if you shut it down if it is not warmed up. Doesn't happen most of the time when you shut it down like that anyways.

That is a pretty funny story about Porsche and 7
