it takes a wing that big to produce downforce at autocross speeds. imagine driving down the freeway at 70 MPH. stick that wing out the window and try to hang on to it..... it would rip your arm right off.
dont belive me..... try it.
ok to be more scientific, there was some testing done and they were prooven to produce down force even at auto cross spreeds. it was not a great deal, but enough that you would sure want it on there (if your class allowed).
I am sure some of the more experienced autocrossers here could elaborate???

That could not be less true... I have seen the down-force numbers for various SM/SM2 class legal wings it is amazing with the right angle of attack and wing size the numbers they can generate at autox speeds. Andy that drives the red FD with the "park bench" on it has some wind tunnel simulation formula and was able to generate a down-force chart when they were working on the SM/SM2 wing rules.
A 8 square foot dual element wing will generate nearly 200 lbs of down-force at 60 mph, the same wing at 35 mph is putting down over 50 lbs of down-force. A 5 square foot dual element wing at the same speeds makes over 100 lbs and about 40 lbs. Because of the angle of attack and the dual element they are getting near the down-force numbers of the spec single element wing used on World Challenge GT cars that run at more than twice the speed.
Another interesting tidbit is that the 8' wing at 75 mph making 250+ lbs of down-force only requires 11.5 hp to overcome the drag it creates.
These are ruff numbers and the quality of the wing can effect it either way. An off the shelf one like on the red FD could be on the low side while a custom one off custom unit like on the black FD can exceed these numbers.

they have differant colors.
Kwescott has a black with the red interior. he got the red kit. Looks freakin Awsome!
they have a piano black I would love to see on an RX-8. since a lot of our peices are already piano black I think it would look very classy.
