Let's put this in perspective now. I'm the first to congratulate Mazda for getting back into racing beside the Abel drag race stuff. And the Courage did finish the first race, a remarkable feat for the first time out. They were 17th overall, some 12 laps down from the leader and 6 laps down from the winner in P2. I believe that there were only three P2 cars in class and the third did not finish. Correct me if I'm wrong there. And the motor they were runing isn't a Renesis but an older version of the mark. (I can just hear the monitor sending me a pm as I speak. Something about... ) Anyway, congrats to the SpeedSource, Mazda, Courage, Mazda needs to maintain a racing heritage. Somehow I wish that Downing had a larger role while the new generation relearns.

Plenty of nice scenery there today .. and the 3-rotor sounded wicked. SilverEight, we probably passed one another once or twice today, but I figure you had photo access ... and I was just out in the crowd. What camera you using? Mine is a simple Sony DSC-S70. Had to guess when to fire the shutter .. it reacts so slowly ... but I got lucky a few times.

There were 4 P2s, 1 DNF. I don't think there is any need for perspective ... it is what it is. Their goal was to finish, they exceeded their goal, despite tapping the wall in practice and getting rear-ended in the race. As you say, a remarkable feat.

My pleasure ... speaking to one of the crew today prior to the race he said the rotary was running great and needed very little twiddling this week. I'm sure this was a going to school race for them. Lots of telemetry and data gathering. Now their real fun begins

I watched the whole 3 hours on CBS and was very disapointed on the Mazda coverage. Only glimpsed the car twice. They hardly mentioned it whereas the announcement from Porsche about its new car got lots of air time.
Mazda needs to learn from the Porsche PR people!

We will be running 3-Rotor evolution of the highly popular Mazda Renesis engine found in the street-prod Mazda RX-8.
I headed toward the rear of the car and there it was: the three-rotor Mazda Renesis engine. It's amazing how small and compact that engine is, and how low it sits in the car. The rotary-specific custom front engine mount was already in place along with all the cooling lines, wiring and side-rails that will connect the rear bell housing to the chassis.

I think Mazda is calling it that because they want to have the Marketing advantaqge of racing this machine. I highly dout they would engineering another 20b in such a short time for racing. On top of this, Guy Cosmo said the engine is not built by Mazda. Its in one of his journals.

Speedsource, the engine builders, have stated that it is a 13G based all peripheral port engine and not a Renesis based engine. The differences between the older 13G and the newer 20B peripheral port engines are minimal. Racing Beat has a 13G tucked away in a corner of the shop. It is for sale for $40K.

If you're going to spend that much on an engine, what's another $8000? I'll bet they'd sell it for $40K. It's been sitting around for a few years. Not making any money that way.

Downing's got a few of them here in Atlanta too ... even seen a 4-rotor over there ... seems a shame to just let such unique engines lounge around ... they ought to be exercised every once in a while, don't ya think?
