I'm having a hard time shrinking the pictures down to the right size. What's a good program to use?

really any editing software should give you the same results...i.e. Photoshop, Paint Shop Pro...etc...

make sure you hold your shift key down while you click on a corner to adjust the size..should turn out well for you...

I only have the crappy windows software. Is there any freeware out there that you can recommend?

Just open the photo in MS Paint, click on image, stretch or skew and in the boxes where it say 100% horizontal and vertical...reduce that to about 20% each....should be real close after that. If not choose undo and then try something a little smaller like 19% until it's just the right size.

I did that and I had to save it as a bmp or gif. the avatar I have now was saved as a gif and it killed the color. If i save it as a bmp and then rename the file as a jpg the forum won't accept it because it says it's not a jpg or gif file........
