There was a really informative article I read the other day that detailed accident reports and %'s of vehicles with fatalities broken up by vehicle type. The conclusion was the larger vehicles (SUVs) were less able to stop, less able to avoid, and because they aren't subject to many of the crash requirements that car's are required to meet, a lot more likely to cause fatalities to the occupants.
You end up with a vehicle that is cheaper to produce, and has a higher profit margin.
Jacking up the vehicle height only adds to the chances of rolling over.
