As far as I know, you have to buy each part and put it together yourself. I have one half made. It could cost 200-400 bucks depending on where you get your parts from. Google it, I'm too lazy to do it for you

Also, you could just drop $400 on that HERO camera everyone's always raving about. I want to get one, but I don't do enough cool stuff to justify it.

GoPro, and ya for cars etc it is pretty sweet. What i like about it also, is you are not limited to JUST being able to attach it to your car, it can go on almost anything. Also, they have it in HD now, i have no complaints.
IMO its the best you are going to get for a reasonable price that you won't freak out about. I asked my wife if i could mount her D7000 and she flipped her $hit, i didn't even think of asking about D3s. bah... crazy camera ****...
but thats what it comes down too, if a $400 camera falls off and breaks, its not too bad. If various other cameras fall off you are out minimum a grand.

all depends on what kit you get and/or what accessories. when i picked mine up i got a few of the accessories. i went with the car kit (suction cup) and added the chest mount, bike/roll bar mount, and an extra pack of the various sticky mounts that come with all of the kits, i just wanted more since they are not transferable. In my defense, this is my only camera/camcorder. I've mounted it too a lot of things, various cars, mountain-bike, my dog (using the chest-rig), R/C car, shotgun (very cool at the trap range), etc.
the new Hero 2 has an improved image sensor to 11 Megapixels, improved low-light capability and records up to 120 frames per second. Basically the picture is more crisp, colorful and clear, it really depends on how picky you are. IMO, i notice a difference, especially with exposure with the sun, if it happens to be really bright out the hero 2 handles the light better and doesn't create over-exposure. but then again they wouldn't make a new model if there wasn't some improvement.
