Helix exhaust sounds
As a public service, here are probably the best recorded sounds available on the internet of an RX8 exhaust. As a secondary benefit, more of us are now able to hear how the Helix prototype exhaust really sounds like. This was recorded in order to sound like it does in real life--therefore, you should compare these recordings with your own real-life experience. It would be unfair to compare these to other clips in the internet that do not capture the full spectrum of sound.
To start with, here are a few idle revs while in the garage. I will try to do more scenarios as time allows.
Recording notes:
I cut out most of the idle silence between revs to get them closer together. The first recording is higher gain with lots of clipping (the peaks are all out of range). The second recording is reduced gain with less clipping, but you will have to raise the volume (more dynamic range).
The bass is entact in the recordings; it is recommended that your sound system provides adequate bass output. Subwoofer, or large floorstanders, etc. With a subwoofer you are basically transported into my garage due to the physical vibrations. If your computer does not have a decent sound setup, it is recommended to burn the audio files to an audio cd format, for playback on your home theater or hifi setup. If you only have a pair of headphones, you are in luck because the recording method I've used is very friendly to headphone listening. You just won't get the physical sensations though.

Ahhh, so refreshing to hear an exhaust sound clip from someone who knows what they're doing rather than a camcorder microphone!
What mics are those? I can't tell with the windscreens on. Earthworks?

I want to get two video recordings done in-car. I don't know what to expect yet from the modified sine-wave power inverter I just got, or the wind factor, but to be continued.
There's speculation the Helix mufflers could be Mazda, Corksport, or Helix. The Helix mufflers are 20 inches circumference, and 14 1/8 inches in length. Someone would have to verify these dimensions with their Mazda or Corksport using a clothes tape measure or similar device.
They're Behringer ECM8000. Yes I ripped a piece off that windscreen trying to put it on, but I've got some screens on order.
Last week I outlined a plan in the aftermarket performance forum on how I intended to acquire the recording equipment and record the exhaust sound. I'm lucky that I could find a pair of uncolored, measurement-purpose, wideband 20Hz-20kHz mics for new $50 a piece. I guess Behringer has a bad name for making copycats? The bass extension, to me, was the key factor and these were readily available.
Not shown, but in the passenger seat was my laptop and USB direct-in box.
For this and any other look-alike leads, I have around 20 photos of the Helix posted up in the aftermarket forum. Most of them are taken while the car is up on a lift, and taken from all angles.
