Yeah - I know, I'd probably be able to sell the mrs' shoes and afford forced induction too

But alas I don't think I'd have a mrs for very much longer after that...

Well, happy new year to you too! I agree 2007 is going to be a gr8 year!

Yeah - I was just kidding too - myself and Nadia have been together for 7 years today. Married for 3.5 months... Also the best thing to happen to me.

I didn't see the Speed n Sound issue though but they couldn't have been too bright testing the 5 speed. Anyway - at least we know we got the right one

CONGRATS!! that's great, we'll get married one of these days too. i'll try post a pic of the 8 that was in the speed and sound. wanted to ask u where u take your 8 4 it's services? and r u happy? i had a BMW b4 and the service was great, it's sad to see how Mazda treats their customers who have bought their top car! Mazda Edenvale is terrible, the last time it was in some one drove into the back bumper and had to be replaced, besides 4 asking them to do things and they dont. asked them 2 adjust my head lights 3 times now and they have'nt got it right. dont even think they put the heat blanket from the recall when i asked them. the list goes on, dont wanna bore u.

I agree that this is one of the major downfalls of having the 8 in SA. I used to take mine through to the Mazda/Ford on William Nicol close to Sandton City out of conveniece as it was on my way to work in Hyde Park. Now that I've moved companies, I took it through to the Rivonia dealership and I haven't been impressed with either.

I've got a friend who also drives an 8 - he stays out in Germiston and always takes his past the dealership in Alberton. He's never complained about the service there. So at my next service, I'm going to take it there - it's a bit of a drive though as I'm out in Fourways, but it's close to work seeing as though I work in the Joburg cirty centre now. I'll see how it goes and let you know - well it might be a while, still got +- 7000k's to the next service, but I'll let you know how it goes...

May car's kinda reaching the end of the service plan though, so I'm going to have to either extend it or take it in each time out of my own pocket - or maybe even do them myself. How hard can it be - there's an air filter, an oil filter, oil and spark plugs to change... Nothing nearly as complicated as a piston engine. I'd have to take it in for stuff like a clutch change, but any other than that can't be too difficult to do yourself...

convenience has been my downfall here 2 as i stay in Edenvale. my 8's also reaching the end of it's service plan 85000 k's now and is a 2004 model what's ure's on? can u extend the service plan?? i know with my BMW i could. i agree on doing it ourselves, and no to the clutch changes l.o.l. u sound kinda like myself with doing things urself. what work do u do? i try to do most things myself besides 2 save some cash, places just don't do things right and can't b trusted. but u get tired and there's never enough time to do everything...

I'm on around 74000 at the moment - 2004 model as well. I'm not sure whether the service plan can be extended, but it's definitely something I'll have a look into - it's really nice to be able to take the car in and fetch it all fixed.

Well, that's perhaps the fantasy that I want to believe. I'll do a check on parts prices and stuff and see how much it'll set me back each services vs. the cost of the service plan. I do like to get my hands dirty though, so I won't mind doing the services myself...

cool let me know... why dont u do the back bumper mesh conversion urself if u dont mind doing things urself? grinder, cutting disc, flexipad sanding disc the style mesh u want and thats it... shop 1a 108 Andries Pretorius Rd Edenvale Jedi Audio. we can meet some time if u like bring Nadia along can meet my fiance Vanessa... and we can mod it, i've got all the tools here and know where to get the mesh... probably cost you about R250 for the mesh. done most of my mods myself. b.t.w check ur brake calliper thread, posted something...

Sounds good. One problem at the moment... Or maybe not - what do you think:

Last year I reversed into a parked car in our office parking lot - the guy was parked illegally and managed to be just in my blind spot. It wasn't bad at all - I was maybe doing 5km/h. So I had the bumper replaced because the guy wanted to go through insurance to repair his car. But they forgot to paint the bottom section black. I didn't pick up on it till after their "complaints" time - gotta love panel beaters. Anyway - I need to get that done sometime too. Do you reckon I need to do it before or after the mod?

Perhaps after is better because any areas that get scratched when we work on it will be repainted. What do you think?

BTW - I saw the post on the Brake Calipers thread - I know it's going to take a long time to do - what paint did you use? Did you import the caliper paints that are sold online or just get paint for like a "House of Paints" or something?

So im not the only one with a 2nd bumper... L.O.L i think getting it sprayed after is a better idea. how does the weekend after this weekend sound? around the 26th. the paint to use must be duplicolour from Autostyle in Mayfair. done my homework any other hi heat paint available locally comes off. PAINT KIT: brush, cleaner, paint, cost about R250/ R350. if u work in JHB central they close 2 u, just off Main Reef rd, Church st. u could drive there in ur lunch time and get the mesh and the calliper kit.

Unfortunately the weekend of the 26th is a bit busy for me - Oh, and on the 27th, we're off to Sun City for the day. I can maybe look at doing it the following weekend. Thanks so much for offering to help as well. I'll check with Nadia - I doubt she'd want to come along - she'll probably want to spend the day with her friends if I'm going to be busy during the day. Do you reckon we could do the bumper and the calipers in one day?

Was just thinking - if I do the calipers, it'll also be a good time to give the wheels a good clean inside. In the mean time I'll try photoshop and idea of what the bumper will look like with the cut-out and mesh insert so that I know what type of mesh I'd be looking for when I got to Autostyle. How do you actually attach the mesh to the bumper - just out of interest?

Another thing I was wondering is how it'll look to see the mufflers through the cut-out.

I'll make sure I bring the camera along so that we can document the mod - most guys on on the forum would love to see the pics - perhaps we could even post a DIY

Maintenance Plan

Hope U guys don't mind me coming in here .......almost seems like you having a private chat (pm ?)

Anyway , recently bought Yellow 5 Speed 2004 , I understood 3 jr Warranty and Maintenance plan , so went to find out what an extended Maintenance plan would cost , R.10260.. 3 more years and I think up to 120000K's ........Turned out RX8 have a maintenance plan for five years so I'm still okay ....Car only have 40000Km on clock ...yeah ! All that after phoning 5 Dealers in Kwa Zulu Natal .... (Thanks Charlene at BarlowMotorWorld in Pietermaritzburg for helping !)

I think with a 10000Km service every now and then it might be worth while having a Maintenance plan , In case something big goes !

Had my sound Changed yesterday , Well ,Speakers that is ....Fli all round ...really clear all though bass seems a bit low...

Hey With - no worries for jumping in...

R10k for an extra 3 years and 120000km's - That's doesn't sound bad - especially if it is a full maintenance plan, not just a service plan. So if something does go wrong - it can be fixed inside that plan. Hmm... I'll have to look into that.

How do you find the Mazda dealerships here in SA?

IRQ5. Sounds good im off 2 the 'black sea' this weekend Durban. L.O.L. Securing the mesh, there r various ways of securing it. the callipers and bumper can b done in a day. just get the calliper paint kit and style mesh u want. don't think u will c the exhaust box through the mesh unless very close and if it does'nt look good, we'll spray it black, that'll hide it. let's c how the weekend after that looks closer to the time. can see everythings back 2 normal again. busy, busy!

howzit. glad u popped up. cool 2 find someone else local!! thanx 4 the info about the maintenance plan, will stop past the dealer soon and get all the info and post what i find out. the fli range is nice but not very bassy, are they amped up? i own a car audio fitment centre and can supply and fit u a SONY 10 disc mp3 rf shuttle which is much nicer than the JVC. the JVC front controller looks abit cheap and has a green illumination and nothing lights up green in the 8, where as the sony lights up blue so it'll match your clocks on the blue mode. original mp3 from MAZDA for a R1026 more is not bad...the SONY supplied and fitted R2000. check out my 'outdated' site 4 my details if u interested. WWW.JEDIAUDIO.CO.ZA. any mods on ur 8? post a pic.

Thanks again for offering to help. I'll definitely let you know what's happening after next weekend. I'll take the trip to Autostyle and get the mesh and paint etc. I'm just busy trying to convince Nadia at the moment - she doesn't see the point of modding. But she'll come around.

Enjoy the "black" see

Cool! what sub is it? and is it in a custom built box? or a mass produced box? i've had a few customers saying the quality of the RF's sound is'nt too good obviously been RF. i would spend the bit extra and get the mazda mp3 unit, it's quite cheap. but if u want the scrolling text etc... get the JVC. We built the loudest official 2x12'' sedan in S.A last year, pushing a strong 152,4 db's at IASCA and at the next IASCA event the weekend after pushed a 153,4. must still get round to doing a fibreglass install in my 8. thanx 4 the rates on the m/s plans. I think they're very reasonable. how much are the strakes gonna cost u? wanna get a set myself, mazda wants R2500!!! I do'nt think a RX8 CLUB exists in S.A. would be really cool if there was a club.

Phat

The Sub is a 800Watt 10"Fli ,Mass produced box that was sealed proper with extra partition put in ...Like I said , Not bad just not WOW ...Will live with it , you noticed how everything vibrate , That is from the bass...Right at my back door also parcel shelve ?(Irritating) Read some thread somewhere here about the door ...have to go search....

Just Place the Order at RX8strakes .......$92 for yellow plastic starkes , Including Shipping , so should be about R.660, IF and WHEN they arrive I will let you guys know ....

yeah a RX8 Club .....I nominate phat as chairman......hee hee ...

Hey With

I'd love to see the strakes on your car. I've been thinking of getting from rx8strakes as well. I'll go for the ones painted to match the wheels. Any chance you could post pics when you've installed them? Also keep us posted as to when they arrive here in SA and what sort of import duty you pay on them if any.

Cheers!

Don't check the forum often, but talkin' about radio.

I used to have a DVD player (the JVC with a small screen) in my previous car. It was VERY convenient. It really gets to me that I can't install a DVD player, all my music is burnt on DVDs and I still had to have 5 of them with some 1000 songs each. Now, I feel really limited. I've been even thinking one can be able to modify the ash tray and hide a small DVD player behind the lid. Obviously I have only driven 5500km and in no way willing to lose that maintenance plan.

I had to add tweeters (Earthquake), replace the lousy rear 6x9 with 4 way pioneers 420W max. Then I put a tube Jensen 480W max sub coupled to a bridged JBL 80.2 amp (putting the tube through the boot opening....well). The setup doesn't blow me away, but the bass is really good. I keep the bass setting on the radio at -6 (minimum) this enhances the high frequencies.

One day I will pass by Phat's shop, just haven't found time yet. Also, the misses isn't over the purchase yet, have to wait a few months for the storm to boil down a bit.
