Be careful not to drift on any surface that migth have any sand or dirt on the ground. That makes the car go out of control. I know I did a 180 while taking a corner at about 55 mph with a quick left turn. Other than that the car handles great on the drifts. Be carefull.

Just start on an empty parking lot, it makes it a lot safer, and not having to wory about trashing your car makes it that much more fun.

GET REAL, If you own a sports car you have to apreciate ALL of these.

GRANTED, trying to drift to and from work/school IS stupid, just like driving like a maniac every time you get behind the wheel. But as a sport come on, they all thake skills, and all are as exiting as it gets. You want to call a sport boring or stupid, try golf or profesional pool. Both sports if your not playing, are not worth watching. Just IMO.


DRIFTING the 8. This is a biased opinion but I dont think there are many cars out there better suited for it, 50/50 weight distribuition, almost perfect neutral handling, light wheight yet it has an ENORMOUS wheel base. It should be right there with the Sylvias, AE86's, FD's, ect. the ony problem would be the price tag, whreking this car would be awfull.

I've spent a ton of time playing with Jeeps off-road. At big events, they have a "tough truck" competition. Basically, the guys drive around a course that looks more like a BMX or Motocross track, jumping and thrashing their rigs.

Drifting reminds me of the tough truck competitions. Yeah, it takes a ton of skill, yep, it's a blast to do. Sure, it's fun to watch... but hell no am I doing it in my car! Other than rally racing and dragracing, nothing is harder on a street car (except crashing).

We're going to find out in a few years that drifting was created by a consortium of tire manufacturers... and clutch manufacturers... In the meantime... it's awesome to watch!

Oh yeah I forgot. I must have been dreaming at NOPI when Chunky Bai took me out in the Signal Auto Silvia during drifting practice and pitched the car into a slide right next to the other Signal car at 95 mph for over 200 yards 2 feet from a concrete barrier because that would take no ***** or skill at all.

You are trolling and you have a point at the same time. I think you should start another thread with that comment.

Drifting is like doing donuts in a parking lot - it is not about getting from point A to B as fast as possible; it is about having fun. Drifting and doing donuts are fun.

My problem is that drifting is often seen as racing. It isn't and I don't see why people associate or even try to score it that way. Someone brought up NASCAR as being stupid, well, as a racing event, drifting is even dumber.

I think a lot of video games are ruined because they force you to drift to get decent scores or feature cars with so much understeer that you have to use the hand brake to get good times. (When was the last time you used your hand brake at an SCCA event?)

Drifting, donuts and burnouts are exhibitions not sports. A 450+ HP RX-8 in a drifting contest is a waste. It should be tearing it up in a TOCA or similar touring car race.

Your right Wiggles, I should start a new thread. The Japanese probably got the idea from Bertil Roos. He invented teaching "Slideways" car control in the seventies. He is one of the few who could compete with a 2L Chevron against the 5/6 L Can Am cars of the era. That was awesome. I suppose I should let the children have a little doughnut in the sun.

But drag racing isn't "judged". Carl Lewis didn't throw anything. He didn't jump anything. He just ran in a straight line. Was he less of an athlete than Brett Favre?

Drifting is more like synchronized swimming. It's hard. Most can't do it. There is a more "performance/function-oriented" version of the activity... and it's JUDGED.

Lets settle this. Drifting IS a sport wether you like it or not. As far as NASCAR goes, believe it or not, it takes alot more than going fast and turning left AND they are DRIFTING in the corners. Just because the rear end isn't kicked out doesn't mean they are not drifting. Its a 4 wheel drift at speeds of 180 or better. In regards to the Ovals they run on, each track has its own charecteristics even if they look the same. Racing surface, track temp, degree of banking, etc. all make a difference in how your car is set-up. Drifting probably has the same considerations dependent on their location. If there were no skill involved in any sport it would be just dumb luck like pulling the handle on a slot machine.

I have a videotape from 1991 with people doing this on a mountainside in Japan, with their brand-new SW20s, Z32s, and FCs.

Drifting in its current form is as much a sport as figure skating, synchronized swimming, and diving are in the Olympics. The cars are not necessarily "racing" towards any type of goal - it's the style and execution that gets points and draws crowds. High-power setups in a drift car allow the driver to lay down more rubber easily. One of most spectacular drift exhibitions I've personally seen was done in Rhys Millen's RalliArt/Advan Lancer Evolution rally car - which I'd imagine makes some pretty good power.

The "fad" has been around in Japan for at least 15 years, and has been mentioned in American auto publications as such ever since. It was only fairly recently that such events were held locally. In the end, drifting provides pure entertainment for enthusiasts and creates a new market for manufacturers.


Anyhow, wouldn't the skills acquired through drifting practice be beneficial in autocrossing, and vice versa?
