My VR Esmeril Turbo RX 8
#51
I'm getting Chris's kit and having it installed by my tuner and dyno tuned before it leaves the shop. We plan on running it and turning up the boost slowly over the winter. I'm not to sure how the inter-x will be for tuning I would have wanted the cobb but if Chris says inter-x then I guess that's what is the best.
Good luck on your build. It is a really good kit with quality parts. My turbo runs real smooth and sound really nice. Take it easy during break in. To be really safe I highly recommend that you install a water meth injection. It will help prevent/reduce detonation.
Does your kit come with atmosphere dump? You will not have boost creep if you dump your exhaust this way. and go with full 3" exhaust. You will get boost around 3200 rpm in 6th gear! The turbo is quite responsive. I have not gone WOT on mine yet since it is still need to be tuned. But judging from rolling acceleration it is very quick even at less than half max boost (12 -13 psi on mine) Stock map is great and safe. You will like it.
Good luck.

Chris just let me know I should be getting my kit sometime next week! Since Chris's turbo is a little different I don't know if my boost will come on differently? I will tell you I just bought everything Chris got for his car to make sure this works as he designed it. I didn't get the water/meth kit and wanted to do his apex seals but didn't want to run up the bill anymore. My installer is my tuner and with the install fee is as many tunes and dyno pulls I want till i'm happy. He also know's Chris and vice versa so they will talk together to iron out any hurdles. Did you do your tune yet? Check out the high horse power thread someone else just did the same kit and he's happy with it.
Ssspeedfreak,
You get your car done yet? I got mine tuned already and there is a video of the car in this Multi photo section if you look for it. It call My Esmeril Turbo Video. We tuned the car on the street using old plugs before the engine rebuilt (replace stock apex seals with Esmeril seals). It pulls hard. I replace the old plugs yesterday with new plugs and it pulls even harder now. Old plugs were all brown. My car is running 8-10 psi right now depending on weather. It runs on open wastegate so temp plays a role in how stiff the spring will open. Cold day it 10 psi. Warm day it is 8-9 psi. We tuned it at 10.5 to 11.5 with methanal. I love it.

I haven't gotten my Kit yet, I think i'll have it all done by Christmass. I don't plan on running methanol and don't thinking of doing the apex seal for a year. I hope this doesn't get me into trouble but there is a guy selling his kit right now that has put 19K on it no problem so I'm thinking it could be ok. I do believe they will have E85 kits in the future which is great for safety. As for now i'm just having issues finding where to put my A/F, E-Boost2 gauges? Any suggestions would be great!
E85 is great but you will get bad gas mileage. Running methanal you get normal gas mileage plus cooling when in boost. And the windshield washer fluid and HEET are cheap. And it not as complicated and a lot cheaper. With E-85 you need larger injectors, fuel rails, fuel pumps, etc and E-85 gas stations are hard to find in some area. Imagine running out of gas when there isn't any E-85 gas station near by. You are done.
Now this kit put out big HP compare to other kits. Stock seals are OK as long as you avoid detonation during tuning or after tuning. If I were you and you will only run stock seal, I would install water meth before the tune. It costs only $400 or so and it will give you safety net during tuning. And tune it conservatively. It OK to have fun but don't push your luck, it aren't cheap.
And about the location to put A/F, Boost gauge, check out Lotec pod. You can do search on the forum. There are many examples there. I have one on mine and it looks stock. YOu can see it on the video. I have A/F, boost and oil pressure gauge. Good luck.

I just picked up a brand new methanol kit from a friend of mine that has a supercharged S2000 and said he didn't need it. I got it for $250 so not bad and your right it will be much safer. You should do a dyno now that its tuned. I still have a little to do before the kit comes in and it looks like i still have some time to wait Chris has taken most of it off but the exhaust manifold is difficult, he has work and its very cold by you.
Hi,
You get the methanal kit at a pretty good price. Is it AEM or SnowPerformance? You know what jet size to use? I choose the 225 ml/min for mine and it works well. When we did the initial tuning we were running old plugs since before the time the engine was rebuilt to put in Esmeril Apex seals. Now I put in new plugs and it pulls harder than before. The car is running too rich right now when the rev is above 6500 rpm and we will tune it a bit more during spring when temp is a bit more consistent. It is snow here in MN and I had already stored my car. No dyno pull for me. I don't know how much horses it makes but I have no problem with the M3.
Prep your car well before the kit comes in. That way you don't have to take things apart and put them back together again. The exhaust manifold is difficult...it only goes in a certain way because of the tight space. The turbo down pipe is also a bit difficult. My suggestion for you is to install the turbo pipes to down pipes first and then install the radiator hoses. This way there is nothing pushing pulling against the pipes when you try to align it. The V clamps are a pain too but they not too bad. Just be patient and take your time. Good luck with your project. Don't forget to update the status once you get everything install.

SSSspeedfreak,
Hey, the kit that you bought, it is not Chris one off turbo kit that he make is it? How many mile you have on your engine? If it has stock apex seal, becareful when you tune it. Tune it rich and then lean it out very small amount at a time. The stock seal is not as forgiving to detonation as the Esmeril seal that I have in my engine now.
You can fit the methanal bottle in the trunk. You will need a different pump when you order it. Which one you get? Snowperformance or AEM? I highly recommend methanal with turbo. Don't tune the car until you have the methanal system up and running. It may save your engine in case something bad happen. If you have more budget I would recommend you install esmeril seals and you will have a more forgiving engine for FI. Good luck

I did get Chris's one off turbo kit! I only have received one box with some of the components so I can't say how it looks yet. I am running stock seals and will be for a year or so. It will be tuned from the get go and we will gradually go leaner and pick boost up slowly from a rich low boost tune. It will be done safely and I have the AEM I got it from my friend so I don't know which pump it comes with. I would have loved to do Esmeril seals but I don't have the budget to do a engine rebuild right now.
That is an impressive kit. Chris took me a drive in his car a while back. It was very fast. This kit makes lots of power so becareful with the stock seal. From what I know stock seal can handle good amount of boost as long as there is no detonation. Chris had run up to 16 psi on esmeril kit (the one I got) on stock seal.

Just figured I would tell ya what I've been doing. The kit is on the car and we have few things left to do. The fuel pump, wire the pump to the air/liquid intercooler, replace injectors, A/F & boost gauges, some vacuum hoses and tune. The overall time on the project is 3 times as long as I wanted but thats soooooo behind me. My tuner is finishing up his last car then its my turn... again. Only about 2 days worth of work left but I have to wait a week till he gets that 3rd gen out. How's things with you?

Glad that things are moving along for you. Take your time and do it right first time. My car is parking for the winter at the moment. I start it up once a month or so when the temp is above 25F. My plan for this spring is to get a Precision 6265 turbo to replace the stock turbo. The stock turbo is still working fine and I will keep it as a spare. I think this is what I will do this spring. Other things....I don't know. If nothing break then I won't fix. So far so good.
Good luck with your built man.

You should do your own install and tune thread ....

Yea I know, I will start it soon. My situation was a bit different then most because Chris had to take his kit off his car in the dead of winter in his garage and i had to install it as the parts came and it was kind of boring to write about. I will start it late next week when it goes back to the shop.
