Painted engine cover

Painted the engine cover and the rear bumper rotor with chrome paint this weekend. My past experience is painting my bedroom wall and kind of try it out first before attemp the front bumper rotor.

I've been tempted to do the same thing myself, but I can't find any tape that will stick to that surface. Somebody told me to try the blue masking tape, so I'll have to pick some up. It's not easy painting that engine cover.

TY_888, thanks for sharing your pictures. ANY pictures we share in here give us a reference for deciding whether or not we want to attempt the same mod. Good, bad or indifferent, we learn from what people have taken the time to post.

I used the same chrome paint on my front accent....you can't tell it isn't the genuine article. The back accent is more of a challenge to tape off. For now, I'm holding off....

your car is blue, why would you paint the heat cover yellow?

i know alot of ppl do strange things to their cars on here in hopes that it will make them look better, and there are alot of good ideas, but you cant expect a 5 min spraycan paint job on your engine will look good comon

That cover gets pretty hot. Anybody worried about the paint peeling off?

did you remove the tags before painting? also, is that red or orange? it look like it came out smooth and nice but how close is the match? i got my paint in a spray on version at pep boys. I eyed it up and sure enough after I was done it was a dead match. after posting a pic of the can for someone I noticed that it said Mazda on the can top. Nordic green can appear different in different light but in the sun it matches exactly

I also got the Mazda spray on paint from Pep Boys. It actually looks darker in person, but i took the pic with the sunlight shining right on it. So that's maybe why it appears orange.
All in all, it's definitely not as good as yours CGRX8, but I am happy with it.

just use regular masking tape. i used the oldest crap tape i had laying around. its not like its going to peel off the original black when removed. i woud avoid packing tape or something that might leave a glue though.

oh and paws, i didnt say it looked bad i think it turned out great but my pic looks a little lighter than in person also... we need new cameras

I think it look nice, my only concern is if the paint going to peel with the heat since the 8 does run awfully hot.

Mine has not shown any signs of peeling so far.
