Pics of RX-8 at Rolex 24
Here's a few pics of the RX-8 from Goldin Brothers Racing that ran at Rolex 24 over the weekend. (They placed 48th out of a field of 62.)
Enjoy! :D

They were running in GT, and their best lap time was 7 seconds slower than the GT3 Porsche that won GT - 10th overall. They obviously had high hopes, and they only completed 336 laps or about half the race.

I was watching that race on Speed Channel, but the cameras kept focusing on the top runners only. I only saw the RX-8 (black/red) once when the top runners overlapped the slower ones lol. The 8 was barely trying by that time, I think it was having problems already.
It's the first time I've watched that race, and something didn't make sense to me. The commentators kept mentioning "manufacturer's challenge" and that term usually has something to do with a publicly-sold vehicle in the race. That is one of the reasons why Ferrarri makes street cars; just to be able to join those races. But how come those kit cars were there? Not only there, they were dominating everyone else. Of course those rockets would win, they weigh next to nothing and their engines are race-built. Unlike the Porsche, Ford, Chevy, RX-8, BMWs, they had the weight disadvantage overall.
It seemed like dela Hoya vs Tyson fight. Sure he's good in his class, but the fight is already determined before they even step in the ring.

For those that dont know, the Goldins RX8 is running a 3 Rotor engine and not a Renesis. It is quite amazing to see this car finished. I personally know the Goldin's and a good friend of mine helped build this car. I watched it go from 100% stock with 80 miles on it to what you see today. They sold 90% of it on ebay HAHAHA. Its amazing all the work that goes into making a car like this. I even have a small video(2mb) of it in the pit taking off, i just dont have a way to host it.

The Rolex 24 was a great race, I loved all the coverage (should have gone myself though, not like it was far away...) but Speed really beat the coverage of the DPs to death. Great, they're faster, but I wanted to see the GTs...Well, more of the GTs than the top 6 or 7 that they kept covering (all Porsches, btw). It's not like they were strapped for time, 14 hours of coverage should have allowed them to cover the entire field at least three or four times before going back to drooling over the top three DP cars.
I didn't even know an RX8 was competing until my friend called me up around 5pm to tell me he was standing at the apex to turn 3 and an RX8 just went by. I kept my eye out for it and only managed to see it once after dark from some DP's in-car camera as he passed it - had to identify it by the light off the round tail lights. Oh well, next year I'll just go myself and I can do my own coverage. :D

Yeah one of the goldins is pretty short(like 5'8") and yes it is VERY loud. The exhaust pipe coming off the header is HUGE!!! I think it is 4 inch. If you want to see the video i have of it in pit, post your email addy and i will send it to you. Just make sure you can accept a 2mb file. I have a CRAP load of pictures of the build up too, just gotta find them

Can you re-size those photos so I can download them? I have high-speed cable and I cannot seem to open them.

I am always glad for SPEED's coverage of any road racing, but honestly had no idea this wild car was out there because of the tight focus on the Daytona Prototypes and the leading GT cars. I thought maybe the GT class didn't allow rotaries any more.
Thanks for the pix!

A 3 rotor huh? I will definitely go to Mid-Ohio then! I'll get some video & stills. Let's see, mileage on a 3 rotor in full race trim - I'd say mid single digits - 6 mpg maybe - probably less. Any 3 rotor experts here?
