Our shops 'do-it-by-the-book'. They have some stupid book, and charge jobs based on that reference.

Thus - if the book shows .5 hr to change the air-filter, they charge you 1/2 hr of labor. Never mind it takes all of about 8 minutes. If the book shows 8hrs to change a clutch, they charge THAT rate. Their 'out' is "Well, if the book shows 8 hrs, but it really takes 10, we still charge you 8.".

Translation?

"If we're incompetent enough to do a 8hr job in 10hrs, you won't have to pay for it"

AAMCO's business model is a lot like Jiff-Lube:
Volume.

If you only f-ck up 3 or 4 jobs in 100, then the liability cost is still lower than the profit margin.

Moreover, it has been documented that if you come in with a known good transmission, they will crack the case "just to be sure" which seems to always lead to an imminent failure.
If your tranny is already bad, they usually just sell you on a complete re-man.

Unbelievable scam...

Yeah, I already realized and learned from my mistake, that AAMCO was the one to blame for t he faulty transmission, but we'll never know nor can I prove it at this point. My car is at Mazda, and is about to recieve a new transmission under warranty.

Mugato and swoope, you guys are real jerks.

Both of them made valid points, but you didn't want to listen. That somehow makes them jerks?
