This is the best-kept secret around, but it's really easy to get onto a race track in your own car, for not very much money. For example, my friend (a former SCCA racer and a former member of the Honda motorcycle racing team) organizes track events through his company (see www.m-pca.com). He buys insurance, rents the track, including corner workers and an ambulance, and recruits volunteer instructors, then advertises it and we all sign up until he has a full track day set up.
Usually we assign ourselves to the novice, intermediate or experienced groups, have chalk talks and safety instruction, spend some time warming up, and eventually drive as fast as we're comfortable driving in our group. We have passing rules and no one is supposed to compete or try to "win;" you just drive safely and smoothly at very high speeds and get off the track when the session ends or when you get tired. The cost varies from $250 - $350 per day, and you bring your own helmet and make sure your car can pass a basic safety inspection.
A lot of groups put on these types of events. Search Google for Trackmasters, for example. I've driven Laguna maybe a dozen times, Sears Point several times, and Thunder Hill, too. It's an epic experience.

^^^ I've used it as my wallpaper for the last week....and I noticed something....they must have used the dash of the automatic maybe? Where's the 9k RPM redline? The whole tach should go up to 10k.
