I was wondering why the car was totalled (the damage on the outside doesn't seem terrible), but then I saw your airbags blew. That's the main reason for the total. When your airbags blow, you have to replace a lot more than just the airbags. In most cases, you have to replace the seatbelts, sensors, etc. Now it makes a lot more sense why your insurance company totalled it.

Dude if I only had the cash. All things in there time
Ahh you will be shifting like me in no time
You have to look at it from there point of view. They dont have the power to fix it. So they give me a list and the option of taking my Car to any shop I want. Thing is they look at; loan amount vs amount owned, quote for repairs, total and replace?
know what I mean?

actual cash value of the vehicle + tax added in - salvage value of your vehicle = total loss threshold.
For example, if your car is worth $18,500, and your state has 6% sales tax ($1110), that equals $19610. If your cars salvage value is $4000 (salvage value is determined based upon how much previous totalled rx8's have sold for), then the threshold is $15610. That means the estimate for the damages must exceed the threshold for it to be deemed a total loss.
That's why I was surprised to see that your car is totalled. It takes a lot to write $15,000 worth of damages. The following needs to be done: airbags deployed, need airbags, sensors and new seatbelts. Needs fender, rear door, hood, entire airbag system, windshield, quarter panel, bumper cover, and headlight. Rocker and uniside seem to be ok, doesn't look like there will be much hidden or suspension damage. It doesn't look like your car has swayed that much, so no frame time looks necessary. I can see how the total damages might exceed $10,000 to $11,000 but not much more than that. I have fixed vehicles that are worth less than the 8 but with more damage. Your vehicle still looks fixable to me.
