WTB Esmeril Ignition
Hi guys, I would like to buy an esmeril ignition upgrade. Got a call from the mazda dealership and they said i need new plugs, coils, and wires. Total was going to be $587+tax. I apparently need new plugs but I just put them in a couple months ago and I barely put 3000 miles on the car. if you got one great, or even a lead in the right direction would be great, Idk if i want to drop $400 on a brand new one...
Thanks.
Thanks.

thanks renesis.
I've been using the BHR igntion upgrade for some time now and find that it's an exceptional product. My car starts up very quickly, idle is extremely smooth, and the car's power band is smooth all the way up to 9000 rpm.
Even with brand new OEM coils, there was always a bit of a hiccup around 6k, that's gone now with the new coils.
I will be honest, I have not had hands on experience with the Esmeril and it might be a good product but the BHR is an easy plug & play system that many here have used with good success, that's why I mention it. The Esmeril kit requires connections (or soldering) which I personally would prefer not to have to do.

just some food for thought.

Hmm, I guess that could work, the only reason im a little held back by that is the connections to the ECU. When they said GM coils, do they mean GM as in the car company??? I've never heard of that. Also, have you ever taken your car to a Mazda dealer with it on, and if so, what was their reaction to it?? After i get my car back, chances are i will probably not take it back, and if i need another engine, i'll just do a NA 3 rotor swap. (thats how sick i am of problems with this engine).

yup, as in the GM that most of us know.
GM coils are popular even in other cars as an upgrade to OEM ignitions. We've seen LS coils and Yukon coils used before.
I haven't been to the dealership in a while as I'm out of my warranty coverage and there's an excellent Rotary shop near me that does work on my car whenever I need.
Dealership reaction can vary quite a bit; I've heard some dealerships aren't fans of any kind of modification and some members have reported that the dealerships complimented the BHR kit.

I have the Esmeril coils, and I would go with the BHR ones over them, unless Esmeril has upgraded to a plug an play harness. The splicing of all those wires is not only annoying, but a further inconvenience if you ever need to return to stock. Additionally, the heatsinks on the BHR coils make it seem that it is a higher grade product overall, but I cannot speak to any performance differences.

I'll look into that gamechild, thank you. I dont think im looking for a performance gain, just better ignition so that the car doesnt misfire like the dealership is telling me.

Charles, i have a question, just in case i have to unplug the BHR coils from the factory ecu, will it retain the factory settings?? sorry, i dont know much about the coil upgrades

renesis: yes, you can unplug the coils, plug in OEM's and all settings remain unchanged.
the only setting you might need to address is the dwell setting but that is ONLY if you have a flash tuner such as an AccessPORT, Hymee, etc and had altered the setting after installing the BHR coils.
If you're not changing the dwell setting (which isn't even required, just some of us with the AP chose to do so) then it's a total plug & play design.
