The RX-8 is a significantly lighter car. My '98 Prelude weighed in at ~3050 pounds in near stock trim at the '00 SCCA Fort Worth National Tour. By contrast, my B Stock '04 RX-8 weighed just over 2800 pounds at the '06 Houston Tour. The RX-8 also has better power, larger contact patches at all four corners, better suspension geometry, better polar moment of inertia (front-mid engine versus H22a hung way out in front of the front axle centerline), a better driveline, a real differential, and vastly better weight distribution.

The RX-8 was a B Stock car - stock-sized SSR Comps and a lightweight "Isley" exhaust are the only weight mods. Everything else as it left the factory. About 3/8 of a tank of gas. Mine fuel starves if the light comes on.
The Prelude was the car I owned when I first started autocrossing. At the '00 FW Tour, it had larger swaybars and an intake. Everything else was stock, down to the wheels and OEM tires. DSP FTL!

but why didn't you ask me for my opinion? i used to own a honda prelude. and for those that kid themselves about what i'm gonna say... suck it and grow up.
see my post count and such... i'm not a troll. nor do i speak bad of the rotary. but quite honestly... i'd have to agree that the prelude would be quicker than the 8.
what i had was a 94 SI(body) with a 97auto H22a4 motor and 98 5spd accord trans. don't ask me why i have that set-up... but even with that, i feel like i miss the punch it had when i had my prelude.
and to make the story even more sad, my car was gutted and after driving my friends ORIGINAL '93 vtec prelude, his car was quicker (because of the short ratio trans) and it was bone stock.
what you might have is a BAD example for preludes, seriously. the type SH does not perform in any way... handling/accelwise. i don't know why... but they may have refined the superhandling now as honda usually uses the prelude as guineapig on new technology. non superhandling preludes seem to perform just as well or better than those equipped from what i've seen and competed against in autox. it can be the driver... but i'm just saying there isn't a real big advantage. the disadvantage would be the excess weight in the SH models, all other factors equal such as driver skill, etc.
but why put down a prelude? it gets good MPG and has decent torque, and good power. dump the SH and swap it for the 220hp japan spec type S motor, and you got a really good 5th gen BB6 to hold on to. a type S motor in a BB1 body would also be a real cool street car.
i turned consistent low~ 15s(had it on my slip from palmdale) with my prelude and i'm a beginner at the time i learned how to line up at the tree. and i thought my friend was bullshittin me saying he turned 14.9s~ consistently... but with my longer trans gears, i believed him after.
anyways, hope this helped. haters can talk ur **** now like u got something else better in ur life goin...
why did i get an 8? tired of the harassment and problems with cops of being a honda owner. that, and i love rotary's

Wow I wake up and I get a lot of previous prelude owners chiming in! Very nice! I love my prelude and I have been looking for a substitute. I was looking at the S2000 but only 2 seats I dont really like that. Plus insurance is a butt load on them! RX8 is going to be my next car. Anyways thanks guys for chiming in from both owners.
i can say this because,well... most street racers buy a civic or integra, and whats sad was that most my friendsi know that owned such just verified that stereotype.
and i had my first illegal race experience at 16 when it was hot in chatsworth...sound familiar?

...why would i be?
i have owned nothing but great cars that've served its purpose.
i'm a car and motorsports enthusiast. a technician. a hobbyist.
people can post whatever they want... i don't care.
its quite obvious someone will post back... i raced blah blah blah prelude with my rx8 with blah blah blah... and won! its obvious for a RX8 forum.... don't you think?
i've owned both and loved what both did. i don't need to lie... i'm not a kid either. its not like i'm in highschool or something, and the name of the rotary stands on a fine line on the publics opinion.
so lil ring beat his friend... boo hoo. who doesn't beat another on a different given day, different given driver?
look! prelude has 200hp 163tq and 2954 curb iirc. it was a faster street car in my opinion.
i'm just curious if you might have thought i'm giving a biased opinion.
even if i had owned both... however one assess performance may differ. so its still...just an opinion. at least i'm not some kid with 1 post count coming in here "hey everyone! i've got the fasetest prelude and can spank any p.o.s RX8" ...
am i? so don't get me wrong

Right, and the 6port MT has 232hp and 160tq AT has 212hp and the 4port has 197hp. Either way, the RX-8 weighs less than a prelude and has a 6speed transmission. The prelude isn't a bad car, but it's still FWD, less powerful, and heavier....

My personal opinion, the RX-8 is a TTD car for NASA and the Prelude is a TTF. Take any good driver - not some street racer - a race licensed driver from a sanctioning body like NASA or SCCA and give them a RX-8 or Prelude in full factory trim and the RX-8 wins 9 out of 10 times.

So I own a prelude SH and I am very curious. I am on the RX8's side. Will the RX8 take the prelude in a straight line? The stats look like its true. But what about in the corners? I would agree so too! A lot of people at preludepower think an RX8 isnt any better than a lude. I told them anyways all I am lookin for is a Prelude thats RWD. The RX8 is kinda a good substitute. What do you guys think?

Prelude is not in the same class as the RX-8. More like MX-6 Mystere. Both now defunct FWD sports coupe. Both were decent sporty cars back in their days. The nearest Honda equivalent to the RX-8 is the Honda Element. What? Both have suicide doors!!!

my buddy used to have a 2000 lude.. no match.. he would say he could keep up with me but i didnt let it bother me.. i was the one in the driver car but i let him brag.

WOW!!!! your car handles soo GOOOD AND ACCELERATION N RESPONSE IS INSTANT!!!
my car with 43K miles still outahandles his 9K mile civic SI haha
I told him they are dump but hes inot hit "V-tec"
he got raped int hat deal though.. the seller was like ohh this car is soo RARE!!!!
they let it go for 27K of the showroom.. he pays only 75 bucks less than what i paid for my 8=]]

I owned a '98 Prelude several years ago. The 5th gen Preludes were good cars for their time, but they can't hold a candle to an RX-8 as a driver's car.
About the only place where the Prelude beats the RX-8 is at the pump, and not by much. I average 16-17mpg in my RX-8, where I averaged 18-19 mpg in my Prelude. VTEC is thirsty.
