why 18's, when the stock rims are 17's? Interesting that the front rim is wider than the rear. (All the evo guys that we saw in SD this last weekend had aftermarket 17's---with street rubber though).

Casey has been pming some of the evo guys, to get some ideas of what they are running, but he is not getting a clear consensus on rim and offsets, as well as whether the fenders need to be rolled.

What is the ruling on fender rolling. I remember talking to you about this when I first started, but don't recall how far you can go.

I think it was that the fenders can be rolled for clearance, but can not be bent outwards to provide the extra clearance. Is this a correct interpretation?

You keep confusing ST and SP rules. In SP you can run any size tire and wheel. You go for the 18 because of the 285. With a 17 most of the tire company's only make 275 or 315. The different size wheels are because the rear fenders on the car are not as big as the fronts. Although this really does not matter in SP because you can cut and flare the fender all you want. All the cars you saw are STU cars with 245 17s on anything from 17X8 to 17x10 wheels.

The Evo forums are not a great resource as only a few people have run those cars. All you need to do is check Berry's car. I would bet it has $15k in it.

There was an issue of Grassroots Motorsports that had an article on the build up of the 2005 Evo that won natls, built by the same guy that built Berry's car, I will see if I still have it.

This is the issue:

^^^ what he said.... and remember what I said about how the 285/30/18 has a wider contact patch, and a shorter rollout then the 17's.
This was the reason why we went with 285/30/18's rather then the 17's I was looking at in the first place.

I was hoping nobody would notice.

You were fast, but I figure on good tires I could've at least matched your scratch time (they were corded at the end of the day). The car can be a bitch to keep under you in slaloms if you don't have grip.

All I had to do is make a clean run to take SS and I couldn't even do that.

I plan to beat you at the Pro also, so make sure you have good tires on.

What class are you going to run on Sun?

I'll make it my goal to beat you at the Pro, since winning my own class ain't gonna happen.

BS on Sunday. I was pretty slow in my car at the practice, so you can expect to destroy me as usual. Hopefully I can get it together and not embarrass you too much at the tour.

Unlike those limp wristed San Fran boys we don't let girly cars beat up on us.

I told Ron we should think about moving the Sol to ES.

Hey, they didn't beat me on scratch or PAX (according to the "official" results)!

We also ran in the same run group, same conditions...now, tell me you ran in a late run group and they ran first

Are you looking at different results for your event. Seems to me Kevin did beat you scratch, only his cones kept him behind you. On the other hand even with dirty runs they still got the SD beat down. btw I do not think the results are 100% right, they don't have my 3rd run right and I think Ron coned every run.

They ran 2nd we were 3rd.

I think I could have gone faster if it was not for my 3 reruns and being a two driver car that was in melt down. My quick run was my 2nd run, I was red flagged on my 1st run, after that the tires and car were to hot. On run 6 I got a 61.4. I was getting so many reruns I had Jennifer go finish her runs before I took my last rerun because I thought we were going to run out of gas.

So, they cleaned the course for you, in other words?

JK, it sounds like you were flying.

And, you're right, Kevin did beat me on scratch. I forgot about that one...

Looks like you'll be in great shape to smackdown the field at SD...nothing less is expected, not to put any pressure on your or anything...

I think they were clean too!
Must happen to the best of them sometimes...

I went just fast enough to win my class.... What you do does not matter to me.

Dont forget that it was like 40 out and you had a codriver, I was on cold tires and beat you for the weekend.

^It was 40 out at Packwood?

Doesn't matter. Bottom line is we all have good days and not so good days...guys like Jason and FM tend to have a lot more very good days

I'm hoping I have a good run at SD. Where it ends up from there, I can't control, worry about or let get in the way of having fun.

UGH!
Anyone want to buy a slightly used former "perceived" overdog ZOK since it seems to have lost it's "edge" in CS.

No sense coming to Cali since everyone knows the ZOK can't beat the 99.
CRAP!
I got non refundable airline tickets.
Oh well..Gotta give it my best shot. Might as well try since I am all signed up.

FM
I was not there... However I hear after Kevin and Ron put on new tires, like the Miata had, they got within a tenth.... Then the Miata driver did one run in the ZOK and beat them both.

From another forum:

Hello,

I don't post much on any of these boards but I do occasionaly read them and I just wanted to drop a line to anyone that cares there will be a ZOK version of the GXP and no I don't have the specifics but it looks like RobL has his info right.

Today I drove a set up GXP and my ZOK back to back. Both on race tires on a fairly fast course in the 61-63 second range. The GXP runs out of gearing QUICK! I was all over the rev limiter. Myself and Ron Bauer drove the GXP and the ZOK we both got mid to low 62's in them. The GXP owner said the tires (Kuhmo's) were about done, they didn't look or feel too bad though. As a comparison I also was on old dead Kuhmo practice tires and my stock rims and stock shocks, the GXP was on OZ wheels with Koni Shocks, my ZOK was putting down the same times as the GXP. I wasn't hitting the rev limiter in the ZOK but was coming close in one spot. The GXP hit the limiter 3 times, and in one spot it might have been worth a shift but I don't know if it was worth .3 tenths (an average time it takes to shift up and down again). In conclusion I do not think the GXP will be competitive at the national level in AS which is sad because I loved the power it had, and this was a fairly fast course. If I am wrong I'll be trading in my ZOK right away but I don't think I am. Some of you will disagree with my assumtion, and thats OK, but only time will prove me right or wrong within the current classing of cars in AS.

In additition I put my good tires on the ZOK later in the afternoon to scrub them in a little before the National Tour at Qualcomm coming up and droped my times down to a 61.5 Ron also matched that time. There was a 99 miata at this same practice that also put down a 61.4 So those people who don't think the 99 Miata can Beat the Solstice should watch for the results at the SanDiego National tour in CS because its gonna be a goooood race. Some people seam to forget that in Solo its the driver that takes all the credit not so much the car and as much as those Miata guys think they are fast, since Telehowski, Thomason, and Braun left CS there is no one left to carry the torch except for a poor colledge student from Kansas. :-))

See you all on course.
Best regards
Kevin

^I can hear the Solsti GXP owners/soon to be owners' panties getting in a bunch, from here...

But, I don't think too much can be taken from one example, one course, one man's opinion and experience, even though Kevin's a great driver. Time will tell whether the GXP is a contendah.

wind died down by our runs....but the heat and the long delay got to our brains. Heat stroke, as well as fatigue got to the best of us...

We left right after our final runs....and it was closing in on 5:45. The problems that complicated the runs early in the day were gone when we were working course, but reared it's ugly head again in run group 5. Problem was corrected for our run group....but the heat had already done it's damage.

On to the times.

Erica:
66.304
68.256 (DNF I Beleive)
69.477 (took the first slalom backwards)

Keith:
67.174 (65.174 +1)
66.617 (Damn it, forgot to turn the DCS off and spent the whole lap trying to get it off)
65.562 (63.562 +1...with a bad push that took me down to gear 1 range entering the second slalom)......had the fastest scratch time of all the BSP cars...but this is why cones have penalties, and why driving experience pays off.

Casey ran a dirty 64...and maybe a clean 65...don't recall, was just so upset the damn Supra took first. MP% ran three runs of 64, two of them dirty, his final run was clean though and looked good.

Denward ran in the 72-82's...was lost on all three runs.
