I have long wanted to put a fancy race dash/datalogger in my car. For instance, the AiM MXL Pista, Evo 4/Mychron dash or the Race Technologies IQ3 Pro. The price has always sort of turned me off, even if they do appear to be getting a bit cheaper. In the new car, the seat and wheel position I'm happy with seem to block the tach pretty effectively. So now I feel more compelled to find a dash. When I'm at PRI in a couple weeks, I'll visit the data logger manufacturers, but in the meantime I wonder something.
In order to work a deal with AT&T on new phones, I had to get a free Android tablet. I have pretty much no use for this thing. But I have wondered for awhile if one can be used as the basis for a race dash/datalogger. There are USB OBD2 adapters. The tablet has GPS in it. In theory, you could also hook up analog sensors to it via the USB port. Do any of you know of a solution for this? If not, I'll just keep looking at purpose-built packages.
Somebody mentioned this the other day in the DSP thread, several different cost options depending on what you may specifically desire. I have no experience at all with it though
I did end up buying an Autosports Labs RaceCapture Pro/Mk3. It has been...finicky and difficult. There is great potential in it, but it didn't work for me right out of the box.
For one, so far it can't display OBD2 data without messing with the car. The car runs like crap and won't rev over 8k. Displaying CAN, which is much more difficult to set up, fixes that issue. Unfortunately, I don't believe fuel level is available via CAN, and that's one I need to display.
I've been able to find some CAN parameters online, but Mazdaspeed seems to have no tables to share with me. That's annoying.
If you buy one, expect to do a lot of configuration to get it to work...or I could just share my config file for somebody to get a head start with.
But it sure is cool. The predictive timing is super good, the GPS lap timing is very, very close to that recorded by transponder and the analysis looks real easy to use.
I still find it a little weird that the car freaks out when the RaceCrapture is polling OBD-II data.
Like, that's one of the most basic things that works right out of the box for the cheapest, worst made ELM327 fakes and mobile apps. How does this whiz-bang thing just end up being "bang"?
I forget, did you try dropping the sample rates down way low (like 1 Hz) and remove PIDs not supported by the RX-8? Like, eliminate all but the OBD-II PID for fuel level at 1 Hz (or lower if you can).

Oh, I'm with you. It's certainly weird. I'll probably keep trying to help Brent debug the problem. I sure would like to use the OBD2 fuel level PID.
But to answer your question, as soon as I add any OBD2 PIDs, it messes with the car.
