I visited the 1/4-mile dragway for the first time ever last night. It was a lot of fun, even though 80-90% of the cars there would smoke the RX-8 (including Cameros, Firebirds, Cobras, Neon SRT-4s, 3000GT VR-4s, and many others). I made about 7 runs, but my best time was 15.30 @ 90.51 mph. I just couldn't seem to nail a good launch. I either sat there and spun the tires and got crazy wheel hop, or I would bog down.
I had my wife with me as a passenger for all of my runs: how much difference do you think it made considering that she added roughly 3.5% to the curb weight of the car? Could my 15.3 have been closer to 15.0? My goal was to break into the 14s, but I had a feeling I wouldn't be able to do it with a passenger. There was another RX-8 there, and his best run was 15.24. I have a lot of respect for anyone who can break into the 14s with this car--it's definitely not easy to do as an inexperienced driver.
Here is the breakdown of my best run:
RT: 0.624
60 ft: 2.257
330 ft: 6.474
1/8 ET: 9.903
1/8 MPH: 71.31
1000' ET: 12.830
1/4 ET: 15.303
1/4 MPH: 90.51
Any suggestions for improving my ET (besides running without a passenger!)? I was shifting just before the rev limiter.

yeah do it. man if RX8 wasn't so slow I would buy a base model 6 speed just to show that I can run 14s. My wife has a fully loaded automatic 8 and it has every imaginable bolt-on. The car runs high 16s and it is slow as a slug

why destroy your car to lose an extra .2? power shifting only causes wheel hop, which doesn't result in acceleration. when you take an rx8 to the track, and it runs anything higher than a 13.5, everyone in the crowd is let down. its the way it is. people either love it because it's an 8, or hate it beause their gutted Kia with a 150 shot is faster.

I took mine to the track for the first time a couple weeks ago. Its only my second time at a dragstrip but I have many years autocrossing in everything from FW, RW and AWD cars. Weather was very chilly around 45-50F out. Made for some cool air, but very cold track so no hookup.
Launching at 6K - 1/2 tank gas - Stock air pressure - 3K miles on car - 6spd Sport Pkg
RT - 0.635
60 ft - 2.248
330 ft - 6.389
1/8 ET - 9.762
1/8 MPH - 73.26
1000' - 12.605
1/4 ET - 14.989
1/4 MPH - 92.72
That was my best run. I ran three others at - 15.039, 15.095, 15.098. I really wanted to get 1 run in the 14's!
There was a turbo 'Busa running street tires that was in the 9's all night

Funny thing...I'm a noob, never been to the drags with my 8. But showing off down the road to a few of my mates, in an attempt to do a 2nd burnout, I revved the thing to 7.5rpms dropped the clutch. Watta y'know...The thing blasts forward without a single sign of wheelspin and got the front lifting itself higher than I've ever felt it lift before. This was done after a 1st attempt where the tyres were probably very sticky.
7.5rpms,drop clutch, wait for traction.......SLAM THE LOUD PEDAL. Must remember for next time at the strip.

unfortunately there's a fine line between bogging, and gear shredding wheel hop. i've gone out on my 'private' testing strip and practiced launches and can nail them one after another on the street. the track is a different ball of wax, since you're practically launching off rubber. not to mention Bithlo (local track) is one of the slickest tracks in the east.

It's surreal to read an rx-8 is doing 15s at the 1/4. Nice car. Wish it has more guts out of the box.
BTW, I have seen STis doing 12s. Good drivers. Average drivers will break 13s without trying it. But they are quite ugly buggers. :D

let me tell you how to shift
shift @ 6500 rpm on first gear you should hit about 35mph
shift @ 8500 rpm on second gear you should hit about 70/75 mph
shift @ 8500 - 9000 rpm on third gear you should hit about 100+ mph
this will give you a better run... trust me!! its not the car... it's the driver!
maybe try powerclutch too... that works... must have at least stage two clutch

This is what you need to do to get that good run in
"For the best launch get the Rpms at 7500 (thats when all the intake valves are open (all four) and you have quite a bit of tourqe.) You'll lay some rubber and off you go. try to maintain your Rpms above 7500 to maintain the most horse power. Oh Yead don't forget to turn off your traction controll, if not you'll never see the 5.9 sec 0-60"
