Carrying Tires to and From an Event. Suggestions?
Just took delivery of a new 07 Sport with performance package. Plan to compete in B Stock after 7 years in my 99 Miata, presently CSP. Can a set of 710s on stock rims be carried in the car or is a trailer a necessity?
With the Miata, I use a Tiretail (Tiretail.com) that hangs them off a hitch behind the car.
Thanks!
Steve

To the OP, which SCCA region do you compete with?

Wheels/tires fit in the back seats easily. You can fit tools/clothes/jack etc in the trunk with room to spare. Just get a set of tire totes and lay down a towel etc across the back seats and you should be set.

The few times I have not driven to the events on my V710s, Wendover and Houston, I used these:

The new version, black and redish, are bigger than the previous version. A 245-35-18 V710 will fit in the small, now with space to spare. My first set was the black/gray 2nd gen bags, and they were a tight fit. Funny story, the first time I used them was Wendover 2005. Everything was fine going up. After changing tires after the event I let the tires sit in the sun, I could not get the bags to zip up. Let some air out and put the tires in the shade and every thing was fine. Got the new set this year, Robert said they added like a 1/2", and they are super easy to get in now. Best B-day gift the wife ever got me.

I did not use them in 2007, or 2005, I used them in 2006 when we ran early. Jennifer used them this year. While you can get by with plastic bags and blankets, been there, they are very nice to have. Xmas is just around the corner, tell you wife, girl friend, parents or life partner, that you want a set.

I think my wife has already bought my Xmas present. I'll keep those Blackwatch bags on the radar, but I may honestly just do the trash bag thing for another season. I'll have a co-driver at 90% of my events (including Nats), so keeping the tires warm shouldn't be an issue.

Thanks!
I had a feeling four would fit fine in the back seat, but as I don't have tires yet to try out figured I'd ask you guys. I had already ordered some Tire Totes assuming I would need them.
Drove around in the RX today. Feels like a limo compared to the CSP Miata and my ESP 05 Saabaru daily driver. It's the first car I've owned with a 6 spd. That, along with the smoothness of the engine necessitates my being very conscious of what gear I'm in so as not to miss a shift. Think I'll be able to handle the second gear courses we have here on Long Island by the spring! LOL!

^smooth ride? I take it you haven't installed the OTS Konis at full stiff, yet!
I'd also add another thumbs up for the Blackwatch bags. My wife surprised me with a set last Christmas. At first, I was thinking it was waaaay too much money to spend on something so simple, but after using them for nearly a year, I'd have to say it is money very well spent, if you autocross often.

Give me a break! I just got the car 2 days ago!!!!!
By the way, do I gather that most guys are using the Konis as opposed to the Tokico D-specs? Concerned that the rears on the Konis are not adjustable. It appears that some are using a stiffer front bar for B stock and some not. Right?

I use the Tire Rack totes.

Not as nice as the Blackwatch ones, but a less expensive alternative since you're already putting a blanket down over the back seat.

The stock FSB is 27mm. Depending on your driving style that might be sufficient, or you could pick up the MS bar which has a slightly thicker wall and is 27.2mm IIRC. Another cheap option is drilling two extra holes (per side) in your stock FSB to make it slightly stiffer or softer than stock.

After hearing ULLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLOSE"s story of how well the prototype hitch he tried ripped out the trunk floor, my tire trailer has been sitting in the garage, unused, for the last year...
I'd really like to use the trailer, as it is much nicer to just leave everything ready to go between events (rather than having to load/unload) and just hook up and go, but I've yet to find anyone who has found a reasonable hitch solution.

Hey all, just bought a VR 2005 RX-8 with 14k miles! Of course, I immediately started looking here for trailer hitch solutions...
I have a lot of experience towing trailers and trailering cars. I dragged a tire trailer behind my Spec RX-7 for eight years before I finally bought a car trailer. That hitch consisted of nothing more than a bolt through the rear aluminum bumper! Of course, I ran the safety chains to the chassis tie-downs so I'd still be dragging it even if the bumper fell off. Never did. But I did have a bumper sticker that read "If you can read this, I've lost my trailer!"
The hitch fossumja linked to is a Da'Lan. They have a good reputation for making quality (and usually expensive) hitches.
Ideally, I would love to have a hitch that was recessed behind the rotor emblem in the rear fascia. Then I could put the stock euro fog light in there when no using it. That'd be cool...

Welcome Bill. Do you plan on competing in B-stock with your RX-8 or are you more into the road racing scene? If you do some autocrosses, I hope to see you at some WDCR events in '08.
I know once we finish prepping my car, my co-driver and I will have a tough time keeping up/beating FS as Jason Burns and Strano both run in that class in the DC Region! Heck, not even Isley was able to best Strano's time at Nats!
