First of all - This thread is hilarious.
ON TOPIC - (IMHO)
The RX-8 is a terrible dragster. All it's other qualities, like suspension, brakes, 9k redline, rotary engine, etc. work against success in the 1/4. $15k to $25k from now you may have a "quick" dragster. Put that same $$ in a 1987 Camaro or equiv. heavy American iron - would probably pull right on by the 8 in a straight line.
OFF TOPIC
Furious - you asked. You got intelligent and meaningful answers. The question you asked of everyone inherently begs for opinion. I won't waste keystrokes comparing drag racing to road racing to someone that does not care.

It would make a great dragster. I see mustangs running slower than the 8 that have 15k in to them . After some money you could have your 8 doing great. BUT dont be expecting them fantasy times .

stock from the factory, the RX-8 is not a drag car but it has potential. the car is still very new and this summer is going to be big for this car. i have heard several companies are in the making of turbo packages and superchargers(including Mazda themselves). if you dont want to spend money on modifing the car then get a WRX or Evo8 thats a 13-second 1/4 mile car.

I have raced for a few years in Pomona and at Battle of the Imports in Palmdale. You may consider 14.3/14.5 slow, but think of some of the other imports at the track (Hondas, Acuras, etc) that may have mods, but are not turbo, NOS, etc. These cars are running in the 15s and 16s.
The 8 isn't necessarily slow in the 1/4 mile, but it certainly is not going to run 12s or 13s out of the box.

well said blksf8. the IS300 stock runs mid 15's. people who are interested in drag racing have some possibilties of making the RX-8 run low 13's. just wait till turbo packages are released
