driving tips..

hey im pretty new to stick and have a few questions...

say im diving like short distance and your speeding up to 30 in 2nd gear and you have to stop at a stop sign or light... and the distances to stop isnt far... do you just press the brakes ? or do you put it in 3rd then downshift to 2nd?

i have a few more but i can think of them right now..

I'm not a moderator, but I think you might want to move this to the general forum as it's not really a racing question.

That being said, I don't think that this is a yes or no answer. It depends on 2 more variables:
1) Are you slowing down to come to a stop, or
2) Are you slowing down to go around a corner?

First off, from a mechanical point of view, the 8 has absolutely fantastic stock brakes. They work really well. I intend to use them as much as possible as late as possible as often as possible.

When you use the engine for braking, you are involving the clutch and gearbox and synchros. When you use the brakes for braking, you are involving the pads and the rotors. Why do I point this out, you ask? The first 3 I mentioned are not only very expensive parts by themselves, but as they are located inside difficult places to reach the labor cost on removing and replacing these parts is very high. The last 2 are relatively cheap parts and are located externally in easy to access places. Therefore, they are cheaper to replace.

Forgive me, but that's the long winded logic behind the statement that pads are cheaper than clutches.

So, if you are coming to a stop, feel free to knock it into neutral (using the clutch of course) and come to a stop with the brakes.

But, if you are slowing down to enter a corner, you are going to want to use the brakes and then select the correct gear you want to be in to accelerate out of the corner. This takes practice, experience and cautious experimentation. The best way to accomplish this is to heal and toe. That's a method by where you use your left foot on the clutch and your right to simultaneously actuate the brakes and throttle pedal.

I'm hoping that's covered elsewhere in a different thread. :D

Hope this answers your question.
