Gauging Interest : Static Cling Protective for the Track
I recently bought a large Vinyl Cutter for graphics on the track car. Some of my work on the GA RX-8 Club Forum as to not crowd this.
http://garx8club.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=41&t=1121
Let me know if anyone needs anything. Onto my real post.....
One of my upcoming projects : Clear Vinyl Static Cling Protective for Track Days
I'd like to gauge some interest in this. Would there be an interest in static cling vinyl protectors for the front of the RX-8? This will be clear vinyl that can be reused due to the static cling. There is no adhesive residue.
There will be two options, One is for the headlights and the fog lights. These kits will be cut vinyl made to fit exactly on the RX-8 headlights.
The second option will incorporate several parts of the below to cover the front area between the headlights and the flat surface right below the headlights.
This protective film will be ideal for protecting against track dirt and sand from the high speed track runs some of us do. It will serve the same as the checkered tape in the red RX-8's above without the need to remove it when going to the hotel at night. It would also allow you to put it on when going on a long distance highway trip for temporary protection against small chips.
This isn't meant to be the equivalent of the high priced 3M protectant with a warrantee, this is intended to be a low cost solution to protecting the RX-8 while at a track event without having the painter's tape look I used to always get (see the sig picture).
I'm shooting for a price of about $20 for the headlight unit and another $20-25 for the bumper protector. I will try it out on my car first in order to ensure that it works well.
Let me know please, I'd like some imput before investing time and money.
Thanks,
Levent

I'd get the headlight and foglight cover. Do we get to choose a vinyl color? I've been trying to make something myself. Got the cling vinyl and made some, but they don't stay on at any speed, just blow away!!
You didn't mention the rotor stickers I see there on the RX-7? Do you do those too?

I cut the front headlights and tried it today. The light kits works really well. I did a few 100+ runs with it and they stay on well. I also cut a few test peices for the front bumper to see if they would stick and they also do. The bumper sizes aren't right yet, I just wanted to make a smaller prototype, but the light kit is great. The 2 headlights fit well and stay on. The fog lights do not work very well. They are too small and curvy for the static cling to work.
Picture of the bumper prior to the application:
I put on the two headlight films. They go on well and then you just work the bubbles out with your thumbs or a squeegie. You can easily tell when there is good contact.
Then I took some test peices and put them on the bumper and hood. They are small, but I was just testing.
The hood one will work easily and I'll just have to size that one right. The bumper I'll have to do some more with. I have to cut the hole on the plotter and get the size right. I had to do the Mazda Emblem hole by hand here. Still a work in progress. I'll keep everyone posted. Anyone doing a track day soon? I need a test subject.....
The static vinyl will come with a backing sheet which can be reused to store the static sheet when not needed. You can put it on when you get to the track and be good to go. From the track sidelines, when taking pictures, you can't really tell anything is there.
I'll be on a road trip up to Charleston this weekend and I'll keep it on the car and test it out on the roadtrip to see how the bumper protectant does for highway driving. I also have a lead on good translucent (yellow, blue, smoke) headlights and taillights as well... but that's for another thread.
The headlight kit is definitely a go. This coming weekend will solidify it.
Also, the website will be up and running soon. Yes, I also do the decals seen on the RX-7.

The Headlight covers have proven to work great. Took a long distance trip this weekend and they stay on very well with no issues. Come off with a pull from the tabs for storage on their sheet and go right back on the light again when needed. A squeegy makes is really easy to apply.
Great protection for track days and even long distance driving if you want. They are meant to be temporary which allows you to put them on when needed, and remove them for storage when not needed. They were tested to 120+ without blowing away. They're very secure.
$22 will get 2 sets (one full set and one extra set). PM me for details. Here's what they look like:
The hood protector also worked well during the trip and will be prefected shortly.

I have just put together a "Track Set" of decals for those who are part of MAZDASPEED and autocross or do timetrials with their daily driver with the Mazda Contingency program. I made the below for a friend who already had numbers, but the future ones will have numbers. These decals have a clear static vinyl backing.
This set includes:
2 x 22" MAZDA decals for the rear fenders
1 x 26" MAZDASPEED decal for the front bumper
2 x 4" class decals (any class you're in)
1 x Front Hood Protector (this goes about 10" deep and all the across the front of the hood)
1 x Front headlight cover set for both headlights
I'll include 2 trackdecal.com decals as well. The hood and headlight protectors have been teseted to 120 mph and stay on. (I haven't driven that fast, I'm a law abiding citizen, they were tested on track conditions). They have also been tested for long highway trips and are a good protector for when you need it. I've put them on and driven on a long distance trips before. They keep the bug splatter and chips off the car.
The good thing about these is that they are removable and will help protect your daily driver while it is on the track.
My initial estimate of cost for the whole set is $75 plus shipping. There will be another test on the track this coming weekend, and will report the additional results.
I'd like to hear from the forum on thoughts please.

Thanks a lot for the kind words. I appreciate it.
I know a lot of us to track events and Autocrosses with our daily drivers where the contingency decals are needed. For those of you who want them, I can make a static cling front MAZDASPEED decal and magnetic MAZDA decals for the sides. The static will stay well on the hood. I can mix them with magnetic ones for the sides. I can make the MAZDA and MAZDASPEED any color needed.
I haven't put together the Mazdaspeed bumpers yet. I'll work on it and get back to you.

Also available with the static backing :
This is something I just completed. The rotors, numbers, class, RX-8, Mazda Contingency are all clear static backed. They are removable and great for Autocross.
