It's about that slow, but I haven't seen a mag test the AT to have actual numbers yet. Someone needs to take their AT to the track because this question gets asked a lot.

the AT also has more torque i thought. its not as slow as everyone makes it out to be and there are no numbers to prove anyone's statements. lets wait till the spring till more RX-8's appear on the tracks

I test drove an AT thinking I would buy an AT- but all I could find right away was the 6 speed to test- after the 6 speed, the AT felt like nothing was happening from 0-20 mph- after that I thought there was pretty good accel. Also when I switched over to manual shifting of the AT- I thought it responded better- Always do a road test shifting manually.
I ended up getting the 6 speed- and and many members know I live and drive in Manhattan- probably some of the worst traffic in the US- If I can deal with shifting - anyone can. (PS- my garage spot is like 2 floors below ground of the tightest turns you could imagine- I bet no one on this forum has a harder job of parking than I do- but it can be done)

Pretty interesting. We definitly get our share of congestion here, and it's pretty contsant (although there are times and Avenues I cna defintitley opn the 8 up a bit) though I think my point still stands that 6 speed can be used in an urban area, without going crazy.

The auto can't be too slow, becuase it has the same hp to weight ratio as the BM 330i. They clocked that at 6.4 to 62 @ BMWUSA.com. The toque may be a factor though. But the RX-8 has a great hp/lb ration, and it is slow (5.9 sec.); so I dunno what to estimate at. All I know is that my '03 Tiburon had 170hp and weighed more than my RX does, and it ran a 6.9 in Motor Trend.

Hey speak for yourself . It all depends on whether you enjoy manual or not. I personally dont think long island is bad for traffic unless you are a rush hour guy, so maybe i can see your point. Theres a few long islanders with manual that will back up my claim.

So the question still remains.
Is the AT slow?
I am getting an AT for the wife in 9/05, she doesn't drive stick very well and I drive a Geo Metro 5sp manual.
Is the AT faster than the Metro?
If it is, it's fast enough for me!!!!!

AT times and city traffic
I have seen 7.8 to 60 for the AT. I can't remember the source, but the MT was rated slower than 5.9 in the same publication.
As for traffic, NYC didn't rate in the top 8 cities for congestion in a recent report. LA was #1, and Houston ranked high; my hometown of Washington, DC was eigth.
This discussion brought back fond memories of scooting through NY in my then-new '56 Beetle. That's the real Beetle, you guys, the one where you could jerk the steering wheel and the rear wheels would sorta step-slide 45 degrees. They did that on the highway, too, from a sudden gust of sidewind. Much fun.
