I need help with some track/autoX research please…
Hi guys,
I'm doing some research on how many RX-8 owners do autoX and track events (road courses), and I was hoping you could help me out. I'm trying to get a gauge on the following:
How many days per year do you AutoX (or plan to)?
How many days per year do you (or plan to) drive on a road course (again, this is days...some clubs run multi-day events, so list roughly how many actual days you are on the track per year)?
Who organizes the events that you attend (SCCA, NASA, PCA, etc.)?
What is the biggest problem you typically encounter at the track? (engine overheats, brakes don't hold up, seat moves around, etc.)
Thanks guys. I think some interesting findings could come out of this...I really appreciate the help.

Pending re-employment, I'll be running around 25 days of a/x and 5-6 days of track work next year. The a/x's are mostly run by the local club (Texas Spokes), with some SCCA Divisional and National events. The track days will be divided between the Texas World Speedway Motorsports Club, Motorsports Ranch (either NASA or Miata club "experience" days), and possibly a couple of PCA events at Texas Motor Speedway and/or Cabaniss (Corpus Christi).
I've never experienced mechanical problems while autocrossing. Haven't had the RX-8 to the track yet, but on my Miata I used to boil the brake fluid until I switched to Motul 600. I'm interested to see how the RX-8's big brakes will stand up to a day's worth of 125-to-40mph braking at the end of the 1-mile main straight at Cabaniss.

Thanks for the info guys...keep it coming.

I'm very curious about that as well! I'm still learning about the RX-8's capabilities.

I'm just getting started in open tracking and so far have spent 3 days on the track. Both events were organized by NASA and the car handled it reasonably well. I did end up boiling the brake fluid on the 2nd day at Watkins Glen. The pedal firmness returned after bleeding the brakes but after doing that I could tell that the pads are a little glazed. So switching brake pads and fluid are on my short list of things to do.

10-12+ track (road course) days a year.
No issues if you prepare for the track in advance. Problems.... unskilled amateurs in your class.
3-4 autox. I'd do them all, but Vegas crew for SCCA is a bunch of slackers, and the only good times are at the speedway (lvms.com).
250+ days a year. Tearing up the corners on the street at the limits of the car. Usual wear and tear, and tire replacement. Problems.... grandmas doing 50 mph in the left lane, traffic, etc.
