Zoom - Some nice video there. It looks like you were getting through some corners cleaner than I was. I think your Falkens are better for tracking than my Goodyears. You got 245's, right? I went cheap and got the 225's.

I clearly heard "Black flag!" on the video, but couldn't make out the rest of the conversation.

i figured thats what probably happened.
Thanks for clarifying.
Damn wing!!

Holy S**t I'm slow.... I'm only noticing this tread 2-weeks after the event...

Well, hey all. I was the in blue 8 out there. I was parked over by ZoomZoomH.

ZoomZoomH: NICE video, looks like you were tearing up your group: good and smooth (as much as I can tell from the video)

A friend of mine in the Blue WRX (C25), took some shots of me and some of the other cars in B group http://www.clubspec.com/forums/galle...lbum=50&page=1. The our 8's definitely looks good on the track

BTW I never met the driver of the Black 8 (black wheels w/ silver lips) moved up into B group on the second day -> they were moving fast!

My milage calcuations showed that my overall average for the weekend (not including the drive to/from danville but including back and forth to the hotel, gas stations, food, etc.) was 8.98 mpg ( 335.6 miles / 37.379 gallons ). The last two sessions on sunday had the highest fuel consumption: 7.6 mpg!!! (76.4 miles / 10.053 gallons). Must have really had the throttle open a lot then worth every penny!!!

MUCH easier to see what's going on

BTW, from the sound it seemed like you were doing the 3->2 shift on that short uphill braking zone before spiral (3 and 4, at the end of the forth passing zone). I was doing the 3->2 shift after coming down the hill just before that last left hand turn (between 5 and 6, which leads out to the mini-straigt to fish-hook). Now that I think about it, your way make MUCH more sense: doing the shift in the middle of a turn to turn crossover wasn't easy! I never though about trying to get it done earlier (at the top of spiral)... definitely tring that next time

thank Conrad (bill's friend w/ the black civic hatch w/ ITR engine) for the compression braking idea, that little dip right before you go over and down into Spiral really helps the brakes to slow down the car, it worked out great IMO

I was going 3-2 after that hill before the last left hander as well. I wasn't comfortable with having the RPMs up going down the spiral... Oh well, guess I have to go back to VIR next year. Darn.

Were you guys also going down 3-2 in the Oak Tree turn?

I was going 3-2 in the Oak Tree turn, but not before the Spiral. Hmm, guess I'll need more testing next year too.

thanks for posting the higher quality version of the video.

I have a 5 speed.
Last year I was dropping all the way to 2nd in oak tree.
This year I stayed in 3rd as long as it was clear space.
I'm not really sure which is faster. But it seemed smoother and less hard/harsh on the tires in 3rd.

I think that's me you're referring to I know there was at least one other black 8 there, maybe 2, but the black wheels with polished lips sounds like me. My car ran in B, C, and D during the weekend. I was in B all weekend, but my co-driver started in C, and he volunteered to bump to to D so he'd get the car after it cooled down for 1/2 hr.

I'm not the fastest guy, but I'm not the slowest either

Yah, must have been you. I saw the car out in C group and but didn't realize it had two drivers, so I figured when you passed me in B group on Sunday that you'd moved up a group (hadn't encountered you before then on-track).

I can immagine that back to back sessions would make the car a bit unhappy... lota heat buildup. What kind of tires are you running? Were they holding up onder that load or getting greasy?

totally off-topic: "My" #10 SunTrust racer (see avatar) finished 4th at Mid-Ohio last weekend. The race ended on a caution due to a horrific wreck by a GT-Class M3. The M3 did EIGHT end-over-ends. It was just doing continuous flips. The driver said the HANS device saved his life. He also credits PTG (of Winchester, VA) for prepping the car and getting the cage right. He was discharged from the hospital at 1am the nite after the crash. The SPEED Channel commentator said it was the worst crash he'd seen in years.

On Saturday, Azenis 615, on Sunday Nitto NT-01.

For my poor co-driver, the car was just about undrivable on Saturday when we were doing back to back sessions. The Azenis were hot and just starting to slide around at the end of my session, so a couple of laps into his session, the car was very slippery. He said the car went from terminal understeer to oversteer pretty quickly, but he's used to an STi. It was a less then optimal setup for 2 drivers.

On Sunday, with him in D, and running on much more heat resistant tires, it was a totally different story. The Nittos have a lot of grip, stand up to the heat very well, and do make a little bit of noise. Nitto/Toyo designed them to be a little stickier than the RA-1, but to still have a long life. I believe they're the spec tire for NASA's American Iron. The were definitely designed with heavier cars in mind. They work quite well on my 2900lb car.

I use 2nd in turn 1, sometimes in turn 4 (depends on traffic), Oak tree, Bitch and at the bottom of the spiral. I am also using 17x8 wheels which gives me just a little more RPM than standard 18's.

Yeah, I saw that one too. Pretty scary.

SPEAKING OF SCARY -- You guys have GOT to see this one. On the front straight at a VIR HPDE event, a Viper *barely* misses taking out a BMW. From the BMW's in-car cam. Listen for the BMW driver's comments afterwards.

Both of those guys were at VIR-G. We were sitting in class, and the instructor brings it up and Viper guy raises his hand- "that was me" and the BMW guy chimed in that he was the other car. Interesting little conversation ensued - not angry at all, but they basically picked the brain of the Viper guy. Lesson to be learned, when driving a Viper at 150+ mph, don't jerk the steering wheel...

2nd in Turn 1 ?? From 120+ in 4th\5th to 2nd?
I am not checking my RPMs after that hard breaking zone but it doesn't seem like I am below 60MPH in the turn. Wow is all I can say.

i am with you on Turn 4 and the Oaktree, Can see The bitch, although I stayed in 3rd and yes, was outpulled going down the short #4 passing zone a few times and after speaking to ZoomZoomH, went into 2nd in the spiral but at the bottom, not the top.

Seems to me to be more prudent to save that shift to the bottom of the spiral where the need to balance RPMs is lower than at the top where you are in the hard braking zone before the off camber hard left. I will try it that way next time but am not sure what I gain \ loose either way.

They were indeed very civil. A little more info for those who weren't there in that class (anyone else correct me if I'm remembering wrong):

This event was apparantly the viper guy's first event back after having previously had a wreck. He mentioned that he was feeling twitchy / jumpy. He was taking the pass on right of the front straight right arround that "kink". At the time he perceived the BMW was comming right, although he acknowlaged in class that the BMW did leave him plenty of room (which the video shows too). He made a small right correction to "avoid" and ended up either very close to the edge or slightly off the right side of the track (don't remember exactly which he said). As that point he jerked the steering wheel left, the wheels bit and all of a sudden he was perependicular to the track and flew right in front of the BMW (as the video shows).

Most of us are knowledgeable/smart enough not to start with the mistake of jerking the steering wheel at 150+, usualy something like this is the last in a whole chain of mistakes that gets out of hand. Personaly I take this as a warning to very very wary of the impulse to try and "save" a mistake; I try to take the split second to concider if I'm really going to help the situation and then only allow myself "limited" input so hopefully I don't get in more trouble. I've still got a long way to go, I still make plenty of mistakes, but more and more of them are being managed appropriately,;so I'm happy with my learning process

Wow, lot more second gear grabs than I. I use 3rd in Horse Shoe / 1, 3rd in Left Hook / 4, 2nd in Oak Tree, 3rd in Bitch, and 2nd at the bottom of Spiral. Though there were many instances in the course that I felt I was out of the power band. I guess now that my toe-heal has been improving I'll start investigating some of these other options. I don't know most of my entry/exit speeds in those corners, but I do know that I'm entering Horse Shoe @ about 40mph, so using 2nd there seems like it's a real possiblity. Bitch is a bit slower so that one makes sense for sure too.

How do you make your 4->2 shifts: cluch in -> shifter to 3 -> shifter to 2 -> rev match blip -> cluch out ? Or do you use some other procedure (e.g. double cluching w/ shifter straight to 2, or two complete shifts)? BTW what size tire are you running on the 17x8's?

I'm with you on this one. Usually at that point I'm standing on my brake pedal and screaming in terror.

...... or was that me standing on my brake pedal, and my instructor screaming in terror? Anyway, it was one of those.
