Light Weight Muffler Ideas For Custom Exhaust?
I'm considering designing a custom light weight single exhaust system that will dump down just like the RB model. I'm not interested in bling, I just want the system as light as possible with good flow and a sound that is not obnoxious.
I did a little searching but didn't find any threads, although I swear TeamRX8 or someone did install a similar install.
any ideas? anyone know of a good titanium muffler? I can't seem to find a universal on on the net.

Here is what Mark (TeamRX8) is using:
http://www.burnsstainless.com/Ultral...temuffler.html
https://www.rx8club.com/showpost.php...3&postcount=47 - pictures of his install.
I'm contemplating buying two of the 12" Burns units and replacing the two heavy (~12lbs) GReddy mufflers in my current cat-back. The reason I want to stay with a dual muffler set-up is strickly for sound purposes since I'm running a hi-flow cat/mid-pipe. With a stock cat in BS you can easily get away with a single muffler set-up but I'm afraid a single muffler in STU trim will just be to loud to live with everyday. Of course that's another $450 investment into my already spent $500 cat-back. I'm almost at titainum territory here...
Now if I go for this crazy idea I need to find someone in the DFW area that can weld stainless.

sound is now my biggest concern, as this is my primary driving car and I don't want a nasty drone at cruise. I was thinking maybe run two exhausts in parallel? would that hurt the flow? or would a resonator + exhaust quiet it down? I'd rather have no sound like the stock exhaust than a nasty one.

it's the same as the Burns Stainless muffler except that Coast's pricing tends to be a bit more, the best pricing is available from Pegasus Racing
be advised that these racing mufflers knock off the rasp, but are not all that quiet, the larger the diameter the louder they will be
make sure you get the stainless steel packing too, the ceramic will burn out almost immediately
they also require a slipover on the exit, you cannot weld the discharge tube directly to the muffler

As far as weight the 16" Borla I use only weighs about 8 lbs. Before I built it I did talk to the Burns guys but they did not think I would be able to stay under our 93db limit with the Burns muffler. I would guess a dual setup would get it done but they are expensive and if you put two on you save no weight. Also because of the way they are built, they come apart so you can repack them, it limits how you can install them.

the Borla has thin stranded stainless steel wool, which is not the same thing as the heavier stainless steel scrubble used in some racing mufflers; which is essentally curley-cue fines from lathe machining that won't wilt and matt out like wool will ...
the Burns-type muffler being repackable doesn't limit how it's installed, you just drop the muffler and whatever tailpipe piece is on it, then disassemble
I'm pretty sure my previous Stock setup with Burns muffler would pass the San Diego sound meter, that's without playing games like an elbow to adjust the outlet away from the sound station

To keep the thread on topic... I'd say the ULLLOSE exhaust is pretty loud at full song. You definitely know when he's on course, but it's bearable for normal street driving. I'm thinking about doing something similar once the car budget recovers from my recent tire purchase.

i visited an local exaust place today to get a quote.
if i bring in my own canister, a 3 inch 2 piece pipe with custom flanges and hangers will only cost me about 250-300+ the cost of my canister.
the meterial they were using was 14 gauge aluminized steel. would that be stong enouph to take on the heat of a rotary + turbo (hopfully soon)?
