question about an "Opps"

I posted this here because I figure it's probably a common question from newbie track runners. However I didn't seem to come up with quite the same question with a search.

I was driving home on the interstate tonight doing about 75mph when I came along someone going slower in the left lane. I did the normal lane change after a bit and started to pass when they decided to move to the right lane without looking. As I look and realize I could probably touch the baby in the car seat to my left I hit the brakes and put half the car on the the paved shoulder to give myself room. However I also know that I have cars behind me so I start to down shift so I can have power to get back to speed. In doing so I missed the 5th gear and dropped to 3rd. Normally I'd have reved up to do this but not knowing I missed 5th I didn't and as I feathered the cluch. I then hear the tires lock. I quickly correct my mistake by popping to 4th and regaining my speed.

I'm guessing that the cars behind me were seeing everything that was going on because they gave me plenty of room to recover. However I know that the wheel lock could do more than just damage the tires. What potential issues should I be on the look out for (besides a soil spot from my passenger)?
