Racing weight
I forgot to mention in my 1/4-mile thread, that I put my car on the scales while I was at San Antonio Raceway on Friday night.
With a quarter-tank of gas and the spare wheel and mobility kit removed from the trunk, my Sport weighed in at 2860lb. :D All-up race weight, with driver and helmet, was 3065.
Edit: Gross weight should've been 3065, not 2065. D'oh!

That's great, Jon! That's a lot better than I expected.

Yeah, of course it should've been 3065. Now corrected.
Ony! What brings you here? Don't tell me you're thinking of abandoning the boingers and starting to rotate? :p

I'm a Mazda fan. I'm on my 7th Mazda right now counting the race car.
And I'm also a rotary fan. Heck, my first race car was a 1974 RX-2!
I'm very interested and considering an RX-8 so I want to learn everything there is to know about them. I am so disapointed with the affordable performace 4-seater cars in the market and I see the RX-8 pretty much as the only alternative for someone that needs a 4 seater. I can't believe how much heavy cars are becoming. The weight of the WRX was one of the factors that eventually made me sell it. The Miatas have spoiled me so bad on lightweight cars that I could not get over the heavy feeling of the WRX.
I've read that the RX-8 listed curb weight was around 3000 pounds and I was disappointed about it, but your post has brought new hope.

Guys,
Curb weight includes a full tank of gas (if we are to compare to other cars). To estimate the curb weight, we can do the following calculation:
(.75 tank) * (weight of gasoline/gallon) = additional weight
(.75 *15.9 gallons) * 6.25 lbs./gallon = 74.53 lbs.
2,860 + 74.53 = 2,934.53 lbs
This is close to some other estimates. However, if we include a spare, jack and tools (to be a good comparison with most cars), we'd have to add another 40 lbs. or so, which would bring the total to about 2,975 lbs.

I look forward to adding another data point on this soon, I have a Winning Blue 6spd base package arriving and I will start by throwing it on the scales. Since the base package skips the fogs and DSC of the sport package it will come in a few points lighter than the Sport package weights listed by folks above.
I also plan to immediately start the process of getting additional weight out of it with an immediate goal of breaking below 2800 pounds unloaded. Will start with lighter exhaust, two piece brake rotors, aluminum pulleys, dry cell race battery, etc., and see how low she will go without scarifice of comfort. Speaking of sacrificing comfort, does anyone know what the stock cloth seats weigh? I have some black Sparco Roadsters sitting here that are 14 pounds or so each that I could swap in for track days if the cloth seats are not already pretty light.....:D

There was a simlar post, fully fueled and a few clicks over 2900lbs.
Add leather and nav, and that's a LOT of weight IMHO.
Anyone weigh the stock leather seats, front AND rear yet?
Cloth rules!

Don't forget moonroof and Bose also come with leather seats. Moonroof alone is about 30-50 lbs. I think. Conventions say that -10lb = +1hp. So I think Sport Package theoretically has AT LEAST 5hp advantage over the leathered versions.

Wow...this thread is a blast from the past. I guess this means you did a search. The RX-8club Gods will be very pleased with you for this.
I have a sport package 6spd, no appearance package, no nothing but rotary accents. I'm hoping when done with modifications, including the SC, that I can keep the curb weight below 2950lbs.

In aviation, fuel is calculated as gasoline weighing 10 pounds per gallon. I think in actuality it may weigh slightly less, as I'm sure the aviation camp overestimated a smidge out of respect for error, but it's a good round number to work with. So, the best place for a quick weight reduction for drag and autocross is actually the fuel tank. Run with a little over a quarter tank and you're saving around 95 pounds.

approx. 6.3 lb/gal
one of the issues is that the fuel level device is so f'd up on the RX-8 that short of running it dry and then putting in a pre-measured amount you really have no sure way of knowing how much fuel is really in there
All I can say is my STU Class RX-8 came in at right where I projected it (2675#)based off known weight remvoal from the Stock Class corner scale weight of my Base model (2830#) which had some significant weight removal. I've seen Stock Class "Sport" models with some significant weight removal barely reach that number on accurate corner scales.

As others have mentioned, scales are off. I know for fact that San Antonio Raceway is between 50-75lbs off depending on the day. Our racecar has been professionally scaled and we must run a certain weight in our class. When ever at San Antonio raceway we always need to add 15 lbs to car in order to make min weight required.
